Have new Barrett 99 with Elite 3200 scope and would like to get a scope that will be the least likely to break or lose settings. I heard variables are not as tough as fixed power scopes- is that true of the Bushnell 6500 2.5x16x50?
I narrowed my choice down to a Super Sniper either in 10x42mil-dot HD, 16x42 (wish they made a HD model), the Bushnell 6500 or if it is still available for $1350 a Nightforce 5.5x22x56. What would experts say is the strongest scope? I consider toughness to be 95% important because what good is great glass, etc if the scope breaks at a critical time.

I have fired a friend's Steyr-Mannlicher .50 BMG. He wanted to see the lifespan of a very inexpensive scope, a Barska 6-24 tactical. Thus far, after about 150 rounds, this scope has been flawless. The rifle itself experienced a trigger malfunction (a small screw in the assembly came loose at the 22-round mark) but the scope, which he said was about $200.00 has continued on without error! He is so satisfied, he does not plan to swap it out.

Strongest will be a fixed power scope. The 10xHD will be the strongest but there are some good reasons to select a Nightforce and better reasons to select a Premier

At what ranges is he shooting? Does he spin up/down the dials with frequency? How is tracking? Though I have never seen one in person, I hear many reports of "super scopes" made by companies traditionally recognized as making sub-par scopes. These stories include BSA's with flawless glass and absolutely perfect tracking, Tascos with glass like an S&B that have never failed though mounted on a sever kicker, etc., etc. I attribute these to 2 sources: 1. Even a broke watch is right twice a day, maybe these lower-tier companies do accidentally make a great scope once in awhile, when the stars align just right, despite their best efforts. 2. Urban legend: "I knew a guy who knew a guy who shot a guy at 1,000,000 yards with a 4X NCStar at night in high wind and through a concrete wall with a .22LR." Terry, not saying it ain't true, but my experience with shooters sporting Barska scopes is that they are for the masses who do not know how to use a scope well enough to see the flaws in its design and/or function. There is no definitive correlation between price and scope quality or value (Leupold and Huskemaw prove that) but, in general, you get what you pay for. To the original poster, get the 10X HD, nothing compares at anywhere near the price. It is very rugged, and the warranty is top-notch, as is the Customer Service behind the scope. |

this photo is controversial. some people say its an exact copy, others say its the real deal. gunny hatchcock used this exact setup a time or two. the argument is that nobody is sure if this is the exact setup he used in vietnam or not.the man was a true genius a visionary before his time. messing with the 50 cal long before barret or anybody else even considered the 50bmg for long range sniping. no wonder he was one of the best ever. back to the op, i find it interesting that the barfska lasted 150 shots. more than likely if a scope is going to break on a heavier recoiling rifle it will happen within 40-50 rounds. i can argue that the ss10xhd isnt the answer. good stuff! i just got the barrett and Elite 3200 and have not yet fired it. I was thinking that I would sell it before it was used. Besides i am sure it will work for 20 rounds , I am more concerned how it will hold up after some use. You all think that the non HD 10x42 is better by much than the Elite 3200? I never heard of the Premier, I would imagine it is very expensive. < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" =""> |

Don't 99s run around $3900? Seems like if you can accept that pain you can top it off with a NF or Premier.
