I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Welcome to Optics Talk.
As stated, BSA is not a very good choice for the long haul. You may get a better scope for around the same $$$ though.
Whats the scope going on?

Well the Swift has a very coarse duplex. To thick for the 17 at 100 yards. I was hoping to stay around $150. Any suggestions?

Not for a buck fity.
If you feel you need magnification and a thinner reticle, your probably looking at spending around $300.
High(er) magnification scopes of low quality are not worth buying, IMO.
These two candidates will serve you well.
If you can work a 3-9x with an AO, this one would be a good pick.
Then again, you may be happy with a BSA. You wouldn't be the first, nor the last.
But before you run out and buy a BSA, I would recommend you read the archives on this forum and see what others are saying.

What about this one from Vortex?
http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx for $99.95. I have read a number of good things about this one. |

Have any thoughts on Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 AO Truplex Reticle? I have looked at the new bsa I like the side focus and good power but I would hate to sink $150 into a peice of junk.

I would consider warne, they are good rings and reasonably priced. And SWFA should be able to recommend the correct height.

I have a BSA on my .17. 8-32x40. I loved it at first. Since I started shooting my .22 more (leupold VXII) and my .308 with a 10x42 super sniper, I realize how junky the BSA is. Its decent for what I paid for it IMO out to about 50-75 yards, but at 100 you can really see the difference in clarity

You mentioned the 6x24x50 Cross Fire I have one of those and I like it It ranges where I want it and does it all very very clearly so my thought on the Cross fire is If you can stand that long can sticking out on top of your Rifle Go for it I paper punch and the can doesnt bother me I have it installed on a DPMS AR 10 308 I am at 500 Yrds with it now just steped up from 300 and I really enjoy this scope as I can see where I am hitting all for just over a Buck If you cant hit anything with a thousand dollar scope your probably arent going to hit anything with a hundred dollar scope just my thought

OK, all the bashing BSA. I am not a BSA fan, but I have a Sweet .22 on my Ruger 10/22 and it has held up for over 5000 rounds, lots of foxes, squirrels, raccoons, possums, skunks, muskrats, a couple of coyotes, a few doves, crows (crows around here know the range of the 10/22 and won't fly within it... I fooled 'em though, I've started using the Etronx 220 Swift... they don't know it's range, yet...), and spinner targets and paper targets. I have not been as dedicated recently, but I used to shoot at least a box of shells every day. Then I would shoot 5-10 rounds with every rifle I had and at least one magazine with my carry pistol. Sometimes I go days without shooting, now. The BDC is Sweet(it continues to perform dead on)..., I zeroed the scope once when I mounted it on the rifle, and the glass is OK. It's 6-18x, but I very seldom crank it beyond 12x. Never had a need for the higher power and it does get dim and fuzzy beyond 12x. I can still acquire and kill a target at the higher powers, but unless it is bright outside, don't use them. Most of the time it sits on 6x.
Once again, I would not recommend BSA, but I don't just hate them. If you stick around here long enough, you will run across heavy complaints for just about every scope brand on the market, even the supposed "great" ones. A set of one does not a good history or comparison make. It is an indicator, but how much of an indicator is still at question. There are several stores around here that let me "play" with scopes a bit, so I get to at least test out several similar or sometimes identical scopes on the most obvious elements. Durability is tested over time. Unless you get several of an item, you have a set of ONE. My personal outlook on "cheap scopes" is that IF the price is cheap enough, the features fit the requirements, the need is pressing (or like me, you simply lack patience), and the return policy is acceptable, it doesn't hurt to try. However, that is NOT a recommendation, just my own way of doing things.

Many years ago I started out using the BSA and learned the hard way. NOT ONE of them stayed true. The only positive thing I can say about BSA is that there customer service was GOOD. You send a piece of junk in and they would return you another just like it QUICKLY. I could not recommend them............
