FINALLY got to shoot my 9.3x62 98 Mauser.
I've got a 1.75-6x32 VXIII w/hvy plex reticle on it so I had to make up a target that I could get a good aiming point on. I may try something a bit different next summer when I work up a load but I was satisfied with this set up and wouldn't call back any shots. The quater(7/8") covers my point of aim and is shown for a size reference.
I was shooting Prvi Partizan factory ammo at 100yds out of a clean bore. Specs show a 285gr bullet at 2263fps from a 24"bbl. Bad day for a chrono so I didn't get the fps out of my 20"bbl. I only needed 4 scope adjustments to get the sight-in I was wanting.
When I started throwing out the idea on another forum about having this rifle rebored (it was a 26"bbl .25-06) I was told by some that rebores tend to not shoot the best. Jim Dubell from Clearwater chimed in and assured me that wasn't the case. Needless to say,I'm more than satisfied already.

living proof that a good tube put on by a smith that knows wtf they are doing will produce good results even with bottom shelf ammo.

Your right there, pyro. I was told by Clearwater that the bbled action was put together VERY WELL and that even though the bbl manufacturer isn't known(possibly Douglas)it rebored and lapped VERY GOOD. Also had them put a recessed target crown on it.
Not sure if this stock is gonna work out as it has a tendancy to lift a good bit at the muzzle when fired off the bench. That surprised me because it has a high comb on it. I only wanted to shoot a minimal amount of the one box of ammo I've got but am going to get on-line and try to get at least one more box. If I do I'm gonna shoot the rest of this box in field positions and see how the stock works. I do want to keep a wood stock on this rifle. Edited by 300S&W - October/24/2009 at 07:29 |

I'd be willing to BET that even with that lousy ammo, you could kill a deer with it, and an assorted menagerie of other creatures. Good shooting, Earl.

THANKS,Dan. I ordered another box of that lousy ammo earlier. I was gonna go shoot it some more today but I think I'll wait until I've got that box in my hands first.

Earl, thanks for posting the photos. I don't recall seeing her. I like your setup very much as it is very business like but with the warmth of walnut instead of cold black synthetic. I just like the look of wood, and obviously it can shoot just fine. Let us know how she does with handloads!

I like what I've read about the caliber and it's history, do you feel it is as soft shooting as people say?

Rather than describing it as soft shooting (UNLESS we're comparing it to Kickboxer's toys!!) I'd rather describe it as a cartridge that if chambered in a rifle of fair weight and with a decent stock design would be controllable in any field shooting position. That's saying alot for a cartridge handling bullets this hvy. Mine weighs right at 8.5lbs as pictured plus sling and 3rds in the magazine. If you'd ever get out my way, stop by and take a few shots.
