Ok Getting down to the basics here for me what do the numbers represent and what are the numbers on a scope you need like 6 x 9x42???? might help a few others if this is explained in a 5 year olds words Howdy

Where in Iowa?   Scopes come in different powers and a scope is either a fixed power or able to zoom through a power range increasing in magnification.  The last number is the size of the objective which is the part at the front pointed toward what you are looking at.   The typical hunting scope most often used is a  3-9x42.   Have you used a camera which will zoom to make the object appear closer - its the same idea.

Iowa City area  just getting started in the long range shooting so taking all this in thanks for the info I getting closer to understanding scopes alot better because in Iowa scopes really arent used for deer the usual Dot scope is most common and we dont have a rifle season

We do have a rifle season in Iowa the last two weeks of late antlerless season in the southern two tiers of Iowa.
Muzzleloaders are often used with a scope and they are much more accurate at distance than a shotgun, I typically set up my shots at 200yds with a musket, but I really perfer bow season because its warmer now.   I'm in Des Moines.

Oh Ok yeah I knew about the two tiers in the south I bow hunt with a crossbow but no hunting for me this season Broke my leg in June and its still not healed still on a cane
