I know this is a loaded question and I hope you can understand. I am in the market for another scope for my nephew for his birthday. Problem is, I dropped 700 on a Tikka 22-250 for him and Im trying to stay under $1000 total which leaves me only 300 to work with . I dont mind getting something off the sample list. He will be hunting deer and yotes in central Texas from a stand or fixed postion. He likes med rings so 42mm or 44mm is as large as he can go. If it was you and you wanted light transmission with enough power for a 22-250, which scope under 300 would you go with? Reticle style unimportant, matte or gloss black finish.

Sightron S2 3-9x42 is under $200.00 and is plenty of scope for the money.

+1 on the 4200.  Great scope, and the rainguard really works.

Sparky, there are lots of people in Montana that use 22-250s on antelope and deer.  Not my choice but many people use it with great results.

Thanks, I guess I always thought of the 22-250 as a varmint cal.

For them most part it is, but with heavier bullets, and with the right ranges, it works great.

Back to the scope.  What ranges will you be shooting at?  I think a 3-9 will cover most, but if you hunt yotes at longer ranges, you may want a higher mag scope.  I have a 3-12 on my 22-250 and have never needed higher.

Thanks for the input guys. The deer in central Texas are rarely over 100lbs. A 60gr bullet at 3600fps with muzzle energy at 1727 from the 22-250 vs one of the all time deer cartridges the 243 Win with 80gr bullet at 1819fps has energy of 1819. Not a big difference, certainly more than adaquate for a 100 lb deer. Ive killed lots of deer with a 22-250, but like everything, (including your super-duper megatron double mega max magnums) placement and judgement are critical.

The range for deer I would expect for him is no more than 150 yards. Yotes he will be stretching it on.

Thanks again all for input. Im know the optics braintrust will steer me in the right direction! Smile

Actually, if it is big enough, it doesn't matter where it hits, just that it hits...  Of course that is predicated upon the assumption that you are merely trying to eliminate the species and are unconcerned with actually eating the animal...

So the 4200? How comparable is the the 3200? I think he'd really like the firefly feature. Thoughts?
