After reading a lot of reviews, I was ordering a Leupold FX-II scout scope when I read a consumer write up that said he was having difficulty focusing on the reticle since it did not have an adjustable eye piece.
I have never bought a scope that I did not have to adjust the eyepiece so that my right (bad) eye could get the reticle sharp. I am far sighted in my right eye only. Even with my prescription glasses on, I still have difficulty seeing closeup with my right eye, although I have always shot right hand. I had eye surgery years ago on my right eye, and it has never worked as well as my left. So, now I am thinking the Burris would be a safer choice, or (insert make/model here) might be better still. Or, maybe it won't be a big deal with the forward mounted scout? HELP Edited by Palehorse - October/10/2009 at 10:25 |

I've never heard of a scope that didn't have some focus device.

I think all scopes have this adjustment, the newer scopes have a quicker adjustment than the older models. Leupold now has a quick adjust which is lockable after setting the sharpness of the reticle. Burris has a quick adjust with no lock ring as do a lot of the others. I do have some Elite 4200 Bushnells with the quick adjust and no lock, but they still seem good to me. That being said I still prefer to be able to lock the eyepiece after adjustment, just another thing you shouldn't have to screw with after it's set up the first time.

Ok, so the guy had an issue. Does that mean he had things set up right? That become the problem. Unless you know that he had things set up right and did not have a defective scope it is difficult to make a valid judgement.

I dunno what to do.
http://swfa.com/Leupold-25x28-FX-II-Scout-Scope-P3261.aspx Sure looks like it has nothing to adjust. I will wait a couple of days to see if an OT'er or two has used one. Otherwise, I will have to find one through which to look. I hyperlinked it for you Doug Edited by tahqua - October/10/2009 at 11:50 |

I checked the link and agree that it looks like it can't be adjusted.
I'd call SWFA and find out if and why before I bought one.
Maybe this would be a better choice for you:

Well if his eyes aren't perfect he'd still need to be able to fine tune the focus of the reticle, not?

There are some scopes around that do not have adjustable eyepiece, but they are mostly somewhat older designs. For example, I have an older Israeli Nimrod 6x40 scope that does not have it (but works fine for me). I suspect that for younger eyes it is unlikely to be a big deal, but matters more as you get older. It is also more critical for high magnification scopes.

On a scout scope? Have you ever used a scout scope? You guys need to look through one sometime I think the design is one less thing to go wrong I'd love to have one in a scout position on a lever action or SOCOM. I got a good chance to look over one of these on a Steyer scout rifle and it is a very cool scope and wider field of view that the Burris model. I have a Burris 1x scout scope on a 45-70 Encore Pistol and it has held up well but they quit making that model.
Aimpoints and ACOGs dont have adjustable focus either. You get your head in the right place and what youve got is what youve got . Ever notice how at lower powers parallax and focus are less of an issue. Here is the other option I dont think it adjusts either but I haven't seen it up close.

What rifle is this going to go on because you could always put an aimpoint in the scout position and at 1x there is no need for an adjustable eye piece.

Wes, the biggest problem here is that Palehorse said that he has eye problems that may make it more important for him to be able to focus the optic in such a manner that most users wouldn't need to.
I'm no optometrist, but if his eyes are bad, any adjustability for focus would be a plus for him, I think, and could make the difference between usability and junk for him.

correct the leo scope doesn't adjust, possibly a problem for you, in any case the leo 2x hand gun scope does and works just as well, and is shorter. The burris works well also. While scout setups are fun it would be up to the shooterThey were conceived in an era before good electronic sites were made,(and mounts). , they were invented in a time before high quality electronic sites such as the eo, aimpoint, etc. which can all be move to the scout position.

Im not sure I understand why he wants to mount one in the scout configuration what rifle is it. I understand the value of placing it there I just dont think the adjustment is needed on that low of a power in a scout scope. He probably needs to just locate one he can look through to see if it will work for his vision. With most rifles he might be better off with a traditional optic. In either case an Aimpoint might be the answer if he has to mount in the scout position and doesnt like the Leupold Scout.
