Side focus on a big game hunting rifle YES or No?
I need some help here. I have a NIB (never used / mounted) Kahles Helica CL 3-9X42 with plex reticle and side foucus adjustment on the left hand side. I'm not so sure that I'm crazy about the side focus. I'm thinking of trading it towards a Kahles KX 3-9X42 with plex reticle (and no side focus). Or even trading it towards a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 with Z600 reticle.
I've never had any of the target / varmit scopes with side focus so I'm just worried that the side focus will mess me up as this is a hunting rifle for deer / moose / elk not for varmits or target shooting. Also I'm thinking of conetrol rings / bases so a scope without side focus would look better and have cleaner lines on the scope / rifle combo. Oh yea, my rifle is an older H-S Precision in 30-06. I seek your input please.
Thanks,
SSgtSmittty

I'm not a fan of side focus scopes for regular, everyday hunting rifles. The CL is a great scope, but may not be your best option if that issue (side focus or not) is a deal breaker. The KX is good but not as good as the CL line. The Conquest is always a good choice IMO.

I personally don't want side focus on a big game scope, as there's no real world benefit to having it for the shots you typically take at large 4-legged critters. It really isn't a big deal either way, but it's just another protrusion to hang up on stuff.

Not sure why a manufacturer would put a side focus (or AO) on a 3-9x(X) hunting scope?? They usually come into play with the higher power scopes.

Kahles CL 3-9x42 is probably as good of a 1" tube scope as there was ever made.
Trading it in for a lesser scope of the same configuration does not seem to make much sense to me. Does side focus get in the way somehow? ILya

Keep the CL-a great scope. The side focus may never be used, but you won't be able to trade for as good of a scope with what they'll give you for it.

To quote Koshkin "Kahles CL 3-9x42 is probably as good of a 1" tube scope as there was ever made. " And from brodeur272 - "Keep the CL-a great scope. " I don't know, but I think I may keep it (side AO and all).

Smitty, I didn't read your post close enough to know that you already had the CL. From the thread title, I thought you were considering buying one or the other. I agree with the consensus; I certainly wouldn't sell it to get a KX just to do away with side focus, as the CL series scopes are a little better than KX. If the Kahles CL is one of the finest 1" tube scopes ever made. |

No guys I've got the CL in my hands.
I couldn't come up with the $ for a Swarovski with a 1 inch tube American. So I got the Kahles CL NIB off the SWFA sample list for $529. It was rated real high (like second line or so) on SWFA's scope ranking chart. everything around it were like $1,000 plus scopes.
