I'm a newby at all of this so forgive me for being so naive. I just purchased a Savage 12BVSS .308 and want to outfit it with a good quality tactical scope but I am limited on funds. As one guy put it, the Minister of Finance wouldn't allow for a scope that costed more than $500 and unfortunately that's my story as well but I'm limited to about $400. That doesn't leave me many options but I have come across the Super Sniper SS10x42M (I refuse to say Tasco) and the Bushnell Elite 4200 4x16x50 that seem to fit the bill. I have a different dilema too, one is a fixed power and the other isn't. I'll be shooting up to 600 yards and I'm not sure that a 10 power will get me close enough. Remember, I'm a newby so I am still learning all this stuff. I will also be changing the stock on the gun too to a tactical stock so I'm going for a tactical scope. The bad ass look is important to me as well. Can anyone help me out here with these two scopes or suggest a different scope that is $400.

At that range, I might even want more magnification: 6x isn't too much for me at 50 yards. If you're doing mostly long range shooting or Varminting go for higher mag. As for the tactical scopes, I think "tactical" generally refers to the features rather than the look. I'm not sure if features like the "mil-dot" reticle are important to you or not, but this Bushnell Elite has the mil-dot reticle, and would be tough to beat for your purpose:
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/426242M/bushnell_elite_4200_6-24x40.htm There's also a Weaver with similar features: http://www.riflescopes.com/products/849412/weaver_classic_v_6-24x42.htm But after adding $30 for a sun shade, you're in the about the same price range, and I'd give the edge to the Elite 4200. If looks are important though, you might also like a silver finish to go with that SS barell. In which case, if the mil-dot isn't important, I'd check out the Weaver Grand Slam, which I think may be a bit better scope overall than the Weaver Classics. Note that the 6-20 below is also Silver, although the Matte is pictured, so it should look more like the first picture (the 4.5-14). http://www.riflescopes.com/products/800590/weaver_grand_slam_4.5-14x40.htm http://www.riflescopes.com/products/800591/weaver_grand_slam_6-20x40.htm |

Just a quick note (warning?) with the Bushnell: it's only got 26MOA of elevation adjustment. That's nothing. That won't get you to 600 yards.
The SS10x42M OTOH has 110MOA of elevation adjustment. Lots of room to take you out to 1000 yards. Also, people who shoot tactical repeatedly report (like the alliteration?) that you need no more than 10x to engage targets out to 1000 yards. I can't vouch for that, but they're far more experienced than I anyway. I suppose if you're varminting, particularly from a benchrest, you'd probably like higher magnification. -Rob |

The Bushnell has much better coatings; if you're looking anywhere
towards the direction of the sun, you'll appreciate the difference.
