A shotgun with a flight-light fore-grip is the way to go, with an AR in backup, in case the intruders are zombies.
Thinking about getting my wife's grandfather a Taurus Judge for Christmas, anyone own one or used one? |

RC, I shot a Taurus Judge and really enjoyed it. It was extremely effective on a watermelon that was charging me at 7 yards. I want one!

shoot a couple 1000 rounds of 410 at skeet every year. some guy had one the other day trying to shoot sheet with one. the judge solved the problem for people who travel alot and camp in areas where revolvers and other guns are not allowed except shotguns for stuff like snakes. it's a work around for stupid gun laws and a substitute for the snakecharmer. If you want to laughed at by pop cans, and the jest of magpies go for it. the best defense load to come out in shotguns in a long time is Federals new tactical slug loads -- loaded down to 1300 fps, which makes for fast follow up shots in autos, puts it way out in the front. if your house is being invaded by a bunch of turkeys use a duplex or bb for defense by all means.

I agree on the shotgun for home defense. But I personally think BB load is a bit light for anything other then very close/tight urban enviornment (apartment, Condo). I can see where BB will help with penitration problems (going through walls). But with winter upon and for some living in colder areas where thugs in heavy coats I'd want the duplex load. For me personally, I have always liked number four buck for a home defense load with a slug thrown in at the tail end as a (just in case) |

The right load in the 410 for the Judge and I believe at short home defense ranges, it might make sense. Ofcourse, the Judge also shoots the long colt too..... SO, if there's ever the need, you got that going for ya.

not sure how going to a small shot size 2 and 4s are going to be better against heavier coats than larger and heavier BB
please tell me what the right load for a 410 is.

BB would probably the the best choice for a 410 but with 12 ga small shot can be extremely effective at close range and still not over penetrate walls.

Do you guys understand the difference between blow back and blow by in regard to a shotgun at point blank range? If you have a traditional barrel when the round discharges it sucks blood and other matter back into the barrel. If you either put a magazine tube longer than the length of the barrel which prevents the barrel from actually touching the perp or second if you have the new style of barrel that is designed to shoot locks with and has teeth on the end and is ported with large side ports you get blow by nothing sucks back in from the suction pressure so your barrel does not get jammed up and you can continue defending against other hostile agressors.

An ounce and an eighth of #9 at 1300 fps and bad breath distance inside the home will do just fine as a problem solver. The blunt force trauma of that shot column is going to irrepairably rupture alot of important stuff inside the body, whether under a heavy garment or in a birthday suit.
Personal chioce for inside is a hi-cap pistol due to room constraints and the chance of physically aggressive bad people. Defending a pistol barrel against an adversary is easier than defending a shotty barrel inside the home.
Now for things going bumpity that are outside the door, I do love the 12 gauge and Hornady TAP buckshot. 18 inch pattern at 68 yards is a dream come true.

Ok...some shotgun people need to edumakate me. I always heard that regardless of gauge size the shot if the same size shoots at the same velocity the difference being you just get more of them as the ga. goes up?????
So in theory a three in .410 with bb isn't going to penetrate any more or less then a 12ga with bb shot ???? |

BB will have adequate penetration for any type of heavy clothing across a room. The bigger issue between 410 and 12 ga is the total amount of transferred energy which is massively different. Across a room either one should be lethal but a 12 ga will do a much better job of stopping the advance and will inflict significantly more damage.

Thanks:
On a side note I have a friend who works for a state agency that had to "dispatch" of a wounded doe and used 12ga. "tactical loads" 000 buck and a couple of the pellets did not penetrate the skull at fairly close range (I can ask what the distance was).
We use tactical 12 ga slugs at work and I can say there is a HUGE difference between those loads and say a Brenneke. I think any shotgun for home defense (provided it is not a single shot) is a formidable weapon...however, I think that if something goes bump in the night a handgun while lacking the "stopping power" is a bit more easy to maneuver unless you get the pistol bayonet JUST KIDDING

BB is a good duck load, and marginal goose load, talking about steel shot of course, much better of course in turkey loads. 1 1/8 of 9s is a great skeet load and thats about it. Its about pattern and percentages, the larger the shot size the more difficult to control the pattern. Anytime you get larger than 4s in any gauge the percentage of shot in a circle at a distance becomes random. sometimess 1/2 the entire shot string will go into one quadrant of the circle and the next time another quadrant, A bb 11/16 oz 410 would give you about 36 bbs. with a combined energy of about 500 ft/lb or about that of a 45 acp. or about 12 ft lbs per bb at about 25 yds. . The difference between a 3" brenneke and say federals new tactical is the difference between 1900 fps vs 1300 fps and about 1000 ft/lbs--- but at the recoil level approach a 375 rifle. While close encounter shots MAY work with a shotgun-- what are you going to say to the crook?? -- you've got to come closer so I can shoot you.

The shotgun can be a formidable weapon at very close range. However, there are several problems in using one for home defense.
The first problem, as Dale points out, is recoil. This can be pretty grim, especially if your wife is trying to use it. One solution: Use a 20 gauge. It will do just about every thing a 12 will, with much less recoil.
The second problem is that the barrel is long and awkward to maneuver inside a home without exposing yourself. Mike is right...defending a pistol barrel against a grab is much easier than defending a shotgun barrel. However, if you can establish a proper defensive position, and don't need to move from there in order to protect other members of your household, a shotgun should work fine.
I've fired well over 60,000 rounds of shotgun shells, and have my share of expert badges and patches. Nevertheless, my choice for wake-up-in-the-night defense against home invasions (and we've had three locally in the last several weeks) is a Glock 23 in .40 caliber. These trolls travel in groups of two, three, four or more. A high-cap auto is easy to grab out of a sound sleep, and gives you the firepower to defend yourself effectively against such living nightmares. It also gives you a quick reload if needed. My second choice would be a short, handy carbine like the Ruger Mini-14.
As for shot size and slugs, you have to make your own choice. At 20 feet, what you pick will probably work. Don't expect it to penetrate the skull or the bullet-proof vests some of these thugs are wearing, however. This means you have to think about shot placement, and be flexible enough to put the second shot in the face, groin or leg if the first one doesn't do the job.
Very Important: Don't think it's over just because you put down the first guy. He's probably traveling with friends just as bad as he is.
