Have a little different question for everyone. I have this set-up and it was purchased specifically for heading to Tok, AK to hunt the white (Dall) sheep. I need to be ready for any shot in any weather as this is a once in a lifetime trip. The rifle currently wears a Leupold VXII 3x9 Compact (33 mm objective). I am a little concerned with the smaller objective and clarity. Is it advisable to upgrade to one of these:
Kahles CL 3x9x42 Multi Zero (~14 oz.)
Swarovski AV 3x9x36 (~11.5 oz.)
Just thinking of light gathering, clarity and overall quality. Budget is somewhat of a concern but not sure my eyes could see a difference. Weight is also an issue (mine and the scope's, I'll be dropping 20+ pounds from me, so hopefully an ounce or two on the scope won't matter.)
Any opinions on this issue would be appreciated. Thank you!

Either would beat the crap out of the VXII. Both are great choices.

If the price of either was close enough to be considered equal, which would be the choice?
(Thanks for the quick response)

Multi Zero is a system that allows you to have a known zero at different distances. To accurately place a shot at 300 or 400 or 500 + yds you have to have some way to determing distance ( rangefinger) and some way to compensate for the trajectory of the bullet. Balistic Reticle, Target / Tactical knobs or some type of system. The Kahles scopes with multi zero will do this for you where the Swarovski will provide you a lovely view of the animal as it runs away.

the way i look at it is the way you do, if you or me drop a few pounds we can live with bringing a few extra ounces for a better quality scope, face it people good quality glass will make a scope weigh more. a couple of ounces of extra scope weight isnt a big deal. |

Are better polished, better coated lens heavier than not? I'm not understanding why the quality of the optics affects weight Pyro.

Both Kahles and Swaro are very good scopes.
Kahles does ot currently have a US importer, so from a customer support standpoint, I would have to recommend Swaro. If that is not an issue, Kahles will perform a bit better in low light because of the slightly larger objective lens. Multizero is also a nice feature to have. ILya

Guys -
Wanted to bring up this long dead post to thank you. Was able to complete my trip and convert the opportunity on a beautiful ram. Though not in as good of shape as I should have been, the ounces did not make a difference and the extra little weight was worth it.
My scope choice, though not listed above it became available prior to the hunt, was a Kahles AH 3-9x42 with TDS Reticle. It saved the hunt. I would highly recommend anyone headed for a once in a lifetime hunt not skimp on the glass. Leupold is good, but to me the Kahles was so much better. The 9mm difference in objective diameter was also a great thing to have in bad weather.
The TDS reticle was amazing. With the sheep active and a narrow window of time available, the guide called the distance, and the scope, especially the reticle, and rifle did their job (my part was slightly lacking but effective).
Thanks again for your suggestions. Will be asking more questions on a more frequent basis!

Of Course! Both my Dad and I got one, hunting rigs very similar, mine a Kimber 84M, 7mm-08, his a Kimber Montana 7mm-08, both with Kahles 3-9x42 with TDS. Needless to say we are very happy, unfortunate we were 10 miles apart when we each shot ours, but other than that it was perfect. He did well for a 73 year old! Warning - His photo is the second and a little bloody (had to carry in water so they didn't have enough to clean up for photos! We were guided by Matt Snyder (Tokmanagementarea.com) Can't recommend highly enough!

Very cool! You'll really treasure these pics and memories for the rest of your life. My trips with Dad were a goose hunting trip and a fishing trip to Canada. Some of the best times of my life. Oh and nice sheep by the way.

Kahles Scopes are hard to beat. I have a 3-9x42 CL that I'd put up against any 1" scope of similar power. That said, I love my Swaros too and the little 3-9x36 rides great on my Kimber Montana .257 Robts.
