As promised the feedback on the competition held at Calvinia,Bushmanland.
Our team of 4 arrived the afternoon before the event in order to familiarize ourselves with the range conditions. Just as well, as I was rather baffled by the shift in impact on my rifle. I was experiencing a much lower trajectory then at the coast. The elevation we were shooting at is 3200 ft and the temp was 79degF. The wind was from right to left at 13 mph.
I was experiencing a drop of 5 and 1/2 inch at 200m and 18 inches at 300m as opposed to my normal of 4inches and 13 inches respectively. This was a bit contradictory to my expectations so I went for a second round of shooting late in the afternoon, with the same result.
The next day arrived with similiar conditions, except that the wind came from left to right.

There were 65 entrants and we all registered and were given the course. What a difficult shoot! Only two targets were used, a springbuck and a jackal. Only the brain shot gave full marks of 30 points. The springbuck the size of a baseball and the jackal the size of an egg. A miss is minus 5.
The heart gave 20 points, lungs 10 and liver 5. Any miss minus 5.

So first up from the 100m: Standing, no rest, offhand !

Next up the jackal sitting or kneeling, no rest at 100m

This was competition 1, with the highest score a 120 / 180. And that was from a National Bisley team shooter. The next best was 85! Very tricky. I did not feature to strongly in this one!!!

The next was from 200m.
First up sitting, no rest at the jackal.

Then it was the springbuck at lying down, no rest!

Again scores were low, with the National Bisley shooter taking the first place. I gathered a few points on this one! No excuses, but for the first time I dialed in for the wind. Out of habit I then still stole a bit of Kentucky windage, placing most shots a tad left. (And those minus points hurt!!)

Then came a shoot with 3 shots sitting with rest from 200m at springbuck, walk forward, 3 shots from 150m at springbuck, walk forward with 3 shots at jackal.

Again our Bisley National shooter came in first. I kept my score tally ticking over, but nothing dramatic.

Last up was the 300m shooting, which consisted of 5 shots at the springbuck, no rest in the prone position, and 4 shots at the jackal, prone with a rest front only. By this time the mirage was hectic and I was stuck on 25X magnification because of using the 3 rd line on the varmint reticule at 25x. The target was vague and boiling!!

By now the field was rooting for someone to put our Bisley shooter down, and White Wilma stepped onto the plate and did not dissapoint. I came first in the 300m event.

Then it was on to the prizegiving event and with this being sheep country mutton was up for the taking!!

In the end I managed a first on the 300m event, 6th overall and our team came 3rd in the team event. The scores were very low as this was a most challenging shoot. The 30th place announced was 5 points out of 990. The National Shooter managed 420/990! 2nd place 225/990. My 6th place 185/990 !!!
Most of us were only going for the heart lung area, so even full heart shots would still only give one 660/990.

These results make the problems you had worth it since you got a lot better rifle for it.

Way to go Wouter! 1st at 300, and 6th overall, and your team did well too. White Wilma will surve you well. Sounded like tough shooting conditions, you did well.

As always, a great story and great pictures.  Thank you, Wouter.  I LOVE these types of shooting situtations.  Great shooting.

Glad to see you getting alot of shooting time, just curious as to the type of equipment the "match" shooter was using?

Thanks for all the encouragement.
Thanks for the links, UIF, I will check them out!

I forgot to add that all the shoots are timed, with 12 sec per round. So 5 shots in 60 seconds keeps the pressure on to squeeze those shots off!

The "match" shooter was using a 22-250 with a Pac-Nor barrel. I do not know what action was on his rifle. He had a Leupold 8-25X50 scope, but the adjustment dials looked rather weird. They were large flat coined shaped, not turret dials.

On the prone position he used the "Bisley" or sniper rifle sling.

This is the dude in action, note the turrets on the scope and service sling.
