Does anyone own a Walther P22 pistol? My wife wants to get one to carry with her. We just had 3 rape cases in our area but they have him now. I know this isn't a cannon or anything but it looks great and fits her hand to and price is not to bad. She doesn't have a whole lot of gun skills so we will be doing alot of practice before she goes off to her gun carrying permit. I told her yes it's not a 9MM but place the 22 in the right spot it will do what your planning on doing anyways (protection). Maybe  a year from now we will step her up to something bigger. Our the Hi Points C9MM any good?
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Hi Hawkman,
I bought a P22 for my wife a little over a year ago. Excellent pistol, and I have had as much fun with it as anything I have ever owned. Very reliable, has functioned with everything well except some old Remington bulk I had laying around, but that was an ammo issue. Same stuff fails in my rifles as well.
I mounted a laser on it a while back for some additional fun. Walther is about to release a PK380, which is identical to the P22, so I will get one for her as soon as it hits the market. All the controls are the same, so it will be a natural transition for her to move up to 380.
Beware, the only problem is that you will want to get one for yourself when the Mrs. tells you to stay away from hers, and it WILL happen !

I read some good reviews on the P22. I guess the first thing I noticed about it was its looks. The PK380. How is the ammo. I was told it wasn't a popular round. Will it be hard to find just anywhere. Didn't know haven't mess with this type.
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

The round is just a 9mm short. Plenty enough for up-close self defense.

I have heard ammo is hard to find in different parts of the country, but where I live I have yet to see a shortage of anything.

Walther was having serious problems with their .22s a few years ago.  I saw three different shooters experience jams with these guns within a short period of time.  Hopefully, they have since solved the problem.

A Ruger .22 automatic pistol is a much better gun, and would last you both a lifetime.  My wife is in love with hers.  I recommend it highly.

As for self-defense, a .22 is better than nothing but can't really be counted on to stop a serious attack except in the hands of an expert shot.  A better choice here would be a Kel-Tec P32,  or a 2-inch .38 Special revolver. (Ruger just introduced a nice one.)

Good .380 and .32 ammunition is still pretty hard to find in our area.  Hopefully, the supply situation will ease up sometime soon.

Did some research on the p22's and as long as the serial number has th prefix "L" in it then it's the updated version because of the jamming. The ruger is the one they showed me at Gander Mountain the new .380 ruger. It's small. The guy said he shoots one and said it has alot of kick, but with practice you would get used to it.
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

That's a nice on to. I think now she is wanting something in a 380,9mm or 40. I said why. She says I just like them. She doesn't have any gun skills and I'm trying to get the P22 for her to shoot awhile before stepping up to something better. If your a good shot and place the 22 in the right spot there shouldn't be a problem. If you had a 380 and shot someone in the leg because you don't have skills isn't worth a crap either.
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

hawkman,
A 9mm is a very tame round to shoot, she shouldn't have a problem with a 9.

That's what I'm thinking too. I had a 9mm that she has shot before and she said she liked it. Then I sold it and purchased a 45. So probably something in a 9mm is what we will get. Thanks Sam

uh...... please don't shoot me in the leg with a .380!  Big Smile
IMO... you can never go wrong with buying a .22!  They are cheap to shoot and you can afford to do lots of practice!  I have a Ruger .22 and it's been great.  I'm sure you'll really like the P22.

I have a 21 yr old daughter and I bought her a Hi Point .380.  It was inexpensive and the .380 doesn't kick very much.  This was the first handgun she ever shot, and it was no problem for her what so ever.  I got it for her 2 yrs ago.  We needed to wait until she was 21 to take it to her apartment and we need her to take a class to be better prepared, but the .380 was not too big for her!  this is the 2nd Hi Piont I've owned and both worked well enough.... never jammed.  But I didn't put 1000s of rounds thru them either....fwit.
take em!

I was looking at the Hi Point but didn't know much about the quality of this gun.

The Rugers I was referring to are (1) their MarkIII4 full-sized .22 pistol (or a variation thereof); and (2) their LCR .38 SPL +p revolver.

The Ruger LCP .380 will probably be a good pistol.  They had to work out a few kinks on the early runs, though.  It is basically Ruger's version of the Kel-Tec.  The only problem I have with it is an overly-long trigger pull.

The reason I recommend the Kel-Tec in .32 is the correct information you got from Gander Mountain.  Shooting .380s out of one of these little guns will stop being fun before you finish the magazine.  The Kel-Tec was designed around the .32, and with the right ammunition (Winchester Silvertips) it's both effective and easy to shoot.

While there are cheap guns out there, it always pays to buy quality.

I bought my first Hi-point to plink with..... something to shoot.  I didn't buy it to shoot 1000s of rounds!  I'm sure it has a considerable Less lifetime than a $400 - $500 gun does.  I only sold it because a friend of mine had a Dad that was a little goofy sometimes and he just had to have it and he paid me more than I could buy a new one.... so I obliged him! Also, my nephew and a friend also bought one at the same time.  We all shot @300 - 400 rounds thru them with no jams.  My nephew still has his and my friend sold his to a guy who also overpaid to have it.

I bought the 2nd one for my daughter, because I new she wouldn't be putting many rounds thru it!  If I were in a situation where my life depended on the use of a gun on a daily basis, I would buy something of higher quality and price!
take em!

I heard Hi-Point is ranked 4th in US gun sales.   So somebody must like 'em.

Just wanted to give you guys a update. The new Walther PK380 is out now. I checked on gun broker and they have a few for sale. I know there were a few people interested in one so I thought I would let you all know. My gun dealer has some that's supposed to be coming to him so it shouldn't be much longer.
I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

The P22 we bought has only jammed about twice, but that was after about 100 without cleaning it. I used the CCI 22 shells. From what I've heard the PK380 doesn't rare up that bad due to it's weight increase over the P22. I think about 2 ounces more, don't quote me on that. OH well if she can't handle it I'll take. Is that being greedy or what?Wink

ha course not!....I got rid of my P22 only because I got it for the reason of practicing with it for cheap...but if i had to buy CCI shells just to fire three rounds without it jamming on me, then it would kinda just defeat the purpose ya know?  If I planned on carrying it then I'd def use the CCI

Check into that Taurus tho (either for you or the Mrs.)..I really want one! But then again I'm just a gun whore lol

I have a P22 and I love it. I've never had a jam even with bulk factory Remington ammo. I mainly shoot CCI stuff. It's a great little gun, feels good, shoots good. I'm keepin it.
You gotta carry it.
