I have a new SS10x42 and the ring under the windage turret started moving while I was breaking in the turret.  What do you guys suggest I do about this.  The scope is brand new and has not yet been mounted, but I have had it for a few weeks now, I have just been to busy to play with it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

While I'm discussing the super sniper I have a few more questions.  How is the finish on everybodies scopes.  Mine has a large blemish about 1 cm wide as shown in this pic.  I realize this doesn't affect the performance of the scope, but I'm still a little upset cause it doesn't look nice on my brand new 700P with very nice badger rings and base.

And finally my parallax adjustment.  The 10m line does not line up with the dot on the scopes body.  Is this normal and if not does this mean that all the other markings are slightly off as well.

Well thats all.  The glass looks great, but with these three defects I am begining to question the quality of the scope.

Thanks for any help.

You should definitely send that one back to us for an exchange.  Please contact our customer service department for a return authorization number.  (972) 617-7056

I've seen the marker bands come loose from not enough glue being used but have never seen one with a defect in the anodizing or one where the parallax marks did not line up.  I want to send this one back to the factory for evaluation.

Thanks

CF

Thank you Chris.  I was really hoping I just got a lemon and now that appears to be the problem.  I got the RMA and am sending it back today.  I will include a printout of these postings to help clear up any questions.

Thanks again,

John

Chris,

Ok I received my replacement scope this morning.  After I focused the reticle I started breaking in the the windage turret.  It felt a little wobbly so I removed it to find that the large o-ring was broken.  Next I removed the elevation turret to discover the same thing.  Two broken o-rings on a brand new scope, I'm not having very good luck with the Super Snipers.  What should I do to fix this.  I would rather not have to pay another 9 beans to send the scope back to Texas.  I'm pretty sure I could get o-rings from autozone but what size do I need, I want to be sure water does not get inside the turrets.  However I have no idea where to find the concentrated salt water resistant grease that is used on the o-rings.

One other thing I'm not sure of with this scope is a large protrusion on the inside.  When looking through the objective lens with light shining through the eyepiece I can see a large protrusion at about the 4:30 position (elevation turret facing up, windage facing left).  I thought it might have something to do with the nitrogen gas port but the bulge seems to be on the opposite side of the scope as the sticker on the bottom.  Below is a picture of what I'm talking about.  Can somebody look through their scope backwords in the light and see if they see anything like I described here.

Thanks in advance,

John

Here is the grease you need:

Dielectric Silicone Compound. Found at Nappa stores.

Stock number is 765-1190

For the O-ring get:

Danco #30 from either a Home Depot, Lowes or a Ace Hardware.

7/8" OD x 3/4" ID x 1/16"

Usually found in the plumbing section.

You may be the first person to receive two faulty scopes in a row. The gap inside the tube is for assembly purposes of the scope and is not a defect. If you run into anymore problems or can not find the grease or the o-rings let us know. We will get you into another SS.

Brady,

Thanks alot.  I called my local Napa and they told me they do not carry that part number.  However they do carry another brand of dielectric grease.  It is about 9 dollers a tube.  As long as this is a dielectric silicone grease will it be ok to use on my turrets.  And more importantly, will this grease and o-ring combination affect the warranty of my SS in any way.  As long as it doesn't I am happy to fix it myself because I have 2 army buddies visiting for the weekend and I plan on taking them to the range to show off my new rig.  Thanks again and let me know about the warranty because I want to be at the range on saturday morning.

As long as it is silicone based you should be fine. What you're doing wont affect the warranty. Hope everything works out. Lest us know if not.

You gotta love it when a company stands behind their product. Even tells you not only how to fix it but where to get the parts and their part #. And because your in a pinch time wont void your warranty and still offers to replace it if you have any more trouble! Very few companies could even come close to that kind of customer service. Kudos to Chris, Brady, and all the guys at SWFA. Now this is why, when someone ask me where to get their optics I send them to SWFA.

Ok, I had to return my second SS because one of the turret markers came loose.  SWFA cut me a break and shipped me a replacement the same day I received my RMA number, cutting the turn around time in half.  First thing I did when I opened it up was remove the turrets to check the o-rings.  One was broken; the other seemed to be ok.  I replaced both the o-rings with danco # 10's (11/16" O.D. x 1/2" I.D. x 3/32").  I first tried the #30 but it was way to loose, I don't see how it could keep water out at all.  Next I tried the Danco # 11 which looked liked the same size as the originals used on the SS's, except a little thicker.  When I put these on the scope I could not fit the turrets over them.  After the #11 I tried the next size down which is the #10.  It is smaller than the original o-rings, but thicker.  I coated them in Permatex dielectric tune-up grease and everything seems good.  The turrets are easy to turn, but tight enough not allow moisture to enter (I hope).

Since this is now my third SS I have a few conclusions about them and SWFA.

1. SWFA is the very best place to purchase optics; they have excellent customer service and stand behind their products.

2. The SS's glass lives up to its reputation.  It is just as bright and clear as described in its reviews.

3. The o-rings are junk.  My first SS's o-rings were in one piece, but the windage knob was extremely difficult to turn while the elevation knob was very easy to turn (similar to my current SS with Danco #10's).  This leads me to believe that they were of slightly different thickness.  Second and third SS had at least one broken o-ring.  If anybody reading this is currently using a SS, I would change out the o-rings with the Danco #10's found at lowes($1.33 for 10 pack) or home depot, and the permatex grease is found at advanced ($2.50 for small tube, $6 for large tube) or auto zone.

4.  The turret markers are not glued down properly.  I fully expect the markers on my current SS to come loose.  When they do I plan on fixing them myself.  A few ideas I had were super glue, loc-tite, and solder.  What do you guys think would be best.

Conclusion:  Even with the few problems I had I still believe the SS is the best bang for your buck when it comes to tactical scopes.  I will recommend this line of scopes to all my friends as long as they change out the o-rings.

I would also like to test out my SS to make sure its waterproof.  It is supposed to be good in 15 ft of salt water, so how about 5 ft of pool water.

Thanks again to SWFA, especially Chris and Brady.

John

If the first thing you did was pull the turrets off with and they were broken, and then did it with the second and again with the third.  Why, if it happened to the first and second would you pull the turrets off right when you got it again.   You might want to think about the way you pulled those turrets off.  What I mean is when I got my SS I turned the turrets back and forth up and down to there limits at least 20 times before putting it on my rifle and sighting.  I have pulled my turrets off to slip the rings and the o rings in my scope were fine, adjustments are crisp and I've had no problems at all.  Hope this helps.

The turrets were not broken, only the o-rings, and only on my second and third scope.  Second scope I received I broke in the turrets 25 turns each way before I pulled off the knobs, they were extremely easy to turn which was much different than my first scope, when I pulled them off they were broken.  I did not want to waste my time breaking in the third scope if the o-rings were already broken, which one was.  Just as I said, the o-rings must be of varying quality because my first scope had allot of tension in the knobs, and I had cranked them back and forth 50 times and they were in one piece.

About the way I pulled off the turrets: I backed out all three screws, then pulled them straight off.  That is the only way I am aware of to remove them.  If I'm doing it wrong then please correct me.

I recommend the SS to someone everytime I go to the range.  I never had any o-rings break.  I guess there was something really wrong with your scopes o-rings.  With all the good reviews this scope has gotten it's about time a default was found, because nothing is too good.  Luckily with the fix from Brady your scope will stil function because the scope really is a great one.

Just put a drop of super glue on the turret registers,
they'll stay for years like that.

If you do decide to solder those to the scope, lemme know
how that works out............soldering laminated paper to
aluminium should be tricky JavaScript:AddSmileyIcon('')

One point - I've just had an "issue" with some o-rings (not on a SS). And it had to do with AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. Actual temps here are above 100ºF - get an the sun and things go to extremes on standard nitrile rubber rings.
