I have a new Savage Weather Warrior in .308. The rifle is relatively light and compact. It will be mainly used for short range whitetail hunting in MI, max range 80-100 yds, most shots 20-40 yds. I have 2 price ranges of scopes in mind. One $200.00 and one $400.00. The $200 range scopes are a 2-7x35 Burris FFII with a 3P#4 reticle for $189.95 or 2-7x32 Bushnell Elite 3200 with the standard reticle for 209.95. The $400 scopes are a 2.5-8x32 Zeiss Conquest with a Z plex reticle at 399.95 or a 2.5-8x36 Leuplod VX-3 standard reticle at 429.95. All prices are here at SWFA.
I realize the obvious answer is to get the best glass I can afford but lets leave that out of the equation. I have not looked through a Burris scope and presently have a Elite 3200 on a T/C muzzleloader. The glass is adequate. I have looked through a leupold VX-3 and it seemed very nice. I do have a Kahles AH and that is nice glass as well. I have not looked through a Zeiss conquest. At the low end I was leaning toward the Burris as I love the #4 reticle, but a reputable gun shop by me does not carry them for a number of reasons. At the high end I like the Conquest. What are your thoughts and experiences on these scopes. Any opinions are welcome. Sorry for being so lengthy. |

I like the Zeiss 2.5-8 with it's etched reticle, fixed 4" eye relief and it's glass.
I've never used one, but have looked through one and found it very nice, especially for the money.

I do have one and LOVE it. It is mounted on a compact .308 and it's just right IMHO. I have no exerience with the VX-3 2.5x8x36 but I have a VX-III and I find the Conquest to be a better scope.

Thanks for the responses. I will probably go with the Zeiss Conquest, just undecided on fixed or variable.

You should check out the IOR 4x fixed also...I'm close to pulling the trigger on it because the #1 reticle kinda does some thing for me. Not too many scopes have it and being an IOR for under $400 is also very attractive. I liked the way Koshkin described an IOR on one of his posts here one time - described looking through it felt as if there was no glass at all because it was so clear.

I do not have the knowledge of most of the guys on here but I still have some opinions for you. First I think the 2.5-8x32 Conquest must be one of the best scopes ever made in that price range. A little heavy but other than that it is perfect. Somehow it combines a large field of view with great eye relief. I find this amazing because eye relief and field of view are interrelated and to get more field of view you must give up some eye relief.Somehow Zeiss gets more field of view and more eye relief than the competition. It is magic. For your purpose I think you are in the wrong power range. If your longest shot is 100 yards you never need more than 4 power. Why not get a 1-4x20 or 1.5-5x32 and enjoy the huge field of view. Looking through one of these at low power is like looking out a big window. You can buy a Leupold 1-4x20 vxll for $300 and have a very fine scope that weighs less than 9 ounces and has a 75 foot field of view at low power and 4.2 magnification at high power. The Monarch African is $280 and gives you a 91 foot field of view at 1 power and 4 power on the high end plus the wonderful #4 reticle.

or you could simple get two Vortex Viper 2-7x32 scopes for about the same money and not compromise on one of your rifles.

Nothin like going back and forth with other choices. I'm still undecided. I don't want it to heavy and do like the variables up to a 7 power.

In that case, it looks like Koshkin nailed it: The Viper 2-7 has great optics in a trim, lightweight package, at a very attractive price. I don't think there's a better value in that price range.

I just went to Vortex's web page. That is an attractive warranty. I've not heard of these scopes or there quality. The shop I just purchased my rifle at is a dealer for Vortex. I will check them out on Friday, Thanks.

The reticle on the vortex seems awful thin. Might be hard to see for low light hunting.
