The Colt Python was in alot folks opinion, one of the finest wheel guns ever. This one was my Dad's and it was purchased for $97 the very first year they were made. When my Dad attended the FBI National Academy, he shot a perfect score on their combat course with this bone stock Python. The action on the wheel gun has to be felt to be believed.

Nice piece, Roy!  The Pythons were indeed very nicely made revolvers; one of the best ever!  Yours appears to be in excellent condition!

Those are not the greatest pics and I wiped them down with an oil "Rust-Pruf" rag and some of it was still lingering on the gun. I just snapped them quickly with a P&S. Basically, the only flaw is a small amount of bluing rubbed off on the muzzle from being carried in a duty holster by my Dad.

That's "honest," typical wear, though.  Yours is in better condition than most I've seen of that vintage.

He retired in 91 from the Glen Rock PD in NJ. The National Academy is an elite training facility run by the FBI for high level LE personnel. It must have worked cause my Dad was a Police Chief at age 31, the youngest Chief in NJ at the time.

Colt Pythons truely were the finest made revolvers that have ever been made.  I no longer own one but I carried one in the 70s.

Yes.  Pythons have wonderful actions.  Being the knucklehead I am, I have passed on some that were at great prices back in the day.  Now all I see is prices that will make my wife find out.  Yours looks like a nice one.

The Anaconda's are nice but a little large for most people's hands.  They certainly do not have the collector appeal of the Python.   The Python is the swiss watch of the gun world.  Anaconda's have the smooth action but it is not as easy to appreciate in a gun that size IMO.

very nice...... its the gun I wanted when I got my GP100.  Is that a .357?  Really like my 100 so far!  Actually, thinking about going to the range tomorrow.... will take it along and put a few down the tube!  Need to put a few down the SIG as well.
take em!

Right you are Roy. The Python is the gold standard for wheel guns.

Thanks Roy for sharing the pics and starting this thread.  I have my father's 6" Python that he bought in the late 60's when he became a deputy, complete with orginal box and receipt it was like a $180.00 if memory service me correctly.

I also have my Uncle's Smith & Wesson model 28 Highway patrolman which was purchased at around the same time.  I haven't looked in the orginal box in years but I want to say it was just under $100 at that time.

To compare the two actions there is no comparison at all. The Colt is like a Swiss watch absolutley amazing.  I had the Smith re-done about 15 years ago since it had sat in a safe and had some rust issues after my uncle was killed.   The Smith's  brought the gun back to be an absolute beautiful piece I had the action worked over and the hammer and trigger jeweled...BUT the Colt bone stock is still a smoother action.

BTW I love the 4" model I can't think of a more beautiful and intimidating looking revolver, that size barrel and the vent rib is just perfection.

I purchased my Python in 1980 new when I was 18 years old for somewhere around $350.00  I loved that gun.  Then in 1987 I made one of the worse decisions of my young life.  I sold the Python for $600.00 so that I could buy a complete set of scubadiving gear.   I can't believe how dumb I was.  Now I no longer dive and I don't have my Python.  Live and learn!!!  Oh how I remember how smooth that action was.
