A friend had a cancellation for an upcoming elk trip in Colorado so I'm taking the spot. I need a new scope and mounts/rings for my Remington 700 30-06. I'll be riding in on horseback with my rifle in a scabbard so I want a durable scope with tough rings. Any recommendations? I want to keep the scope at $350 or less.
Thanks,
Mike

Bushnell 4200 3-9x and Talley rings, this will be pretty much a best buy in your price range. Excellent scope and really nice ring mounts.

Some else in the know will have to tell us if you need the extended mount with that scope. http://swfa.com/Talley-Lightweight-Aluminum-1-Scopemount-P2843.aspxp Edited by supertool73 - August/12/2009 at 10:44 |

This is exactly the combination I was thinking of. Does anyone know if I will need the extended rings? From another post it looks like the low will be fine.

The 06 is just perfect for elk and I have to agree with the guys, that the 4200 3-9 is also perfect.

The .270 has the same action length of the -06, no? So did you need the extend ring mount or the regular? Edited by supertool73 - August/12/2009 at 11:09 |

Regular light weights. I just had to mount them pigeon toed! My Bushy is actually the 2.5-10X40, don't know if the turret housing is bigger or not. I can take a picture tonight and post it for everybody.

Budperm,
Any reason you went with the 2.5-10? Seems like a lot more money to gain .5x on the low and 1x on the high. Something I'm missing? Different internals etc...?

It costs more to make a 4x erector system over the 3x system of the 3-9x. Other than that they are the same quality scopes with the same glass quality. I honestly cannot tell a differnce optically between my 3-9x and my friends 2.5-10x.

Internals are different. The 2.5-10 is the new 4 erector internals while the 3-9 is the older 3 erector internals of the 3200 series. So the 3-9X40 4200 is really a hybrid. I was lucky enough to find the 2.5-10X40 with multi-X reticle 422104M at the same price as the 3-9.

Just to offer something different. A set of 1pc Talleys and this would do very well for ya:

If it were just one trip I'd serisously consider the Leupold but I'll be using this rifle back in NY and PA so a 3x9 is better for me. Costs are adding up quicker than I thought for this trip. I may consider putting a Team Primos and the Talley one-piece to save a few more bucks. Anyone see any problems with the Primos or picking one up from the sample list? |

No poblem with the Primos at all! If you REALLY get down to having to watch your money you could go with a different base/ring set-up and one of these and not be giving up a thing. Of course the few extra bucks you'd save on the scope could go towards the Talleys.

If you want to save even more try the Bushnell Legend 3-9x. I have one and optically it is very close to the 4200. It does not have rainguard, but it is still a nice tough scope. I had it mounted on a 45-70 lever gun initially and after about 250 rounds of heavy loads the parallax went out of adjustment. After being repaired it is has been on a 7mm semi auto and a .243 semi auto for a couple hundred rounds and has worked very well. I would not hesitate a second to buy another one if I was on a budget.
