Would you buy this reticle and would you have to shoot at 14 power on a 4.5-14 to use it?

I'm not crazy about the bow-tie windage system, but for big game i'd use it. For varmints i believe there are better reticle's out there. As in any 2nd focal plane multi-stadia reticle system it doesn't have to be applied at the optic's highest power to use it. In fact, they actually have a "floating subtension system" established for that reticle that they call the "Ballistic Aiming System." I'm sure it's on their website.

The system on the Leupold B&C is set at the higher magnifications. While not always at 14. On the 4.5-14 it will be between 12 - 14 depending on the cartridge to be used.

Having to shoot at 12-14 power would be a deal breaker for me. Maybe the 3.5-10 would be a better proposition. This would be for a 30 caliber, 180 gr ballistic tip, at 3250 fps. Anyone have one of these and use it?

I have a 4.5 x 14 that has the B&C reticle. I use it on my Remington 700 in 7mm Mag. When you get the scope it comes with a chart that lists the calibers and at what power you have to use to use the reticle. I set my scope on 10 for my 7mm caliber because that was where the chart told me to set it. I am currently looking for my instruction book, I have recently moved, but I believe, for the 30 calibers with that grain bullet, you are going to have to use the 14 power. This is the main reason I do not like the reticle- it is very constricting. Hope this helped you.

What about the CDS (custon dial system) in the new VX-3. This is a 4.5-14x 40 looks like a better route to me. Anyone tried these?

I called Leupold Tech today to find out my question and they told me I'd have to use the highest power on the Boone and Crockett. Also they confirmed you could install the Custom Dial system with the B@C later for $140. I don't know about you guys but I don't feel like shooting a 300 Wby at 14 power at game, but I could do it at 10 power.

Yup, I thought that was right. I was let down when I got this scope and reticle, but it works pretty well for my 7mm Mag... I just have not bought another.
