I'm finishing up my "inexpensive" ar build, it is 16.5" barreled flat top.  It will be used for plinking and home defence, I'm considering a 1x or very low variable. Price range under $150.00.

I think I might be pretty happy with a Weaver V, 1-3X variable on such a rifle...
For home and property defense at night, illumination makes a lot of sense. Tough to do well and reliably in that price range, though.

A mounted Surefire light merits some serious thought in a home defense rifle too.

I've got it at $190, I'd drop it to $175 + shipping.

The optic is fine, the QD LaRue is outstanding.

(I took it of and mounted a US Optics 1-4, needed "some" magnification.)

Iron sights or a Weaver V3. These isn't much else in the $150 and below price range that I would trust to be rugged enough for home defense. Anything else would have to be in a QD mount so it could be shucked in an emergency, and I'd really want a QD for the V3. Even the cheap Bushnell Trophy red dots that I've used all relied on a lightly mirrored lens and reduced light transmission significantly.

I have the 1-4 on my sons ruger mini 14 and I think I will put the 1.5-6 on another rifle fairly soon.  Not a real expensive scope but nice to have the illumination for coyotes.

I have the vortex strikefire in the for sale section as well.  $120, it comes with the high mount.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

Vortex Strike Fire with LaRue QD mount.

I've had no issues with the site - and the mount is top-shelf.

I decided on magnification, so this is sitting on a shelf in my closet.

Just an offer, if it ain't what you want or need, DO NOT buy it.

I'd be keeping the La Rue mount and trading the Strike Fire in on an Aimpoint 2 moa even just for a backup or you know what would be fun --- it to put it at the back of the quad rails in front of the reciever 45 degrees right of the high power glass on an AR. Just roll the rifle over to acquire your dot.
