A friend and I have had this discussion.  He loads his magazines below full capacity (ie. 8 rounds in a 10 round mag) because he feels that it greatly extends the spring life.  What do Y'all think?

I also keep 2 less than max in my mags that are stored.  I don't know for sure if this helps extend spring life, but its the method I use.

Interesting question. I have been told for years that one should load one less than max to avoid spring fatigue, and that one should rotate sets of magazines every few months. However my Glock police duty mags and those of the other officers I work with have remained loaded constantly for the last 8 or 9 years and  have been treated rougly dropped to the ground during range qualifications carried year around in inclimate weather and none have failed.  I also know military units who leave their M16  30 round magazines fully loaded all the time in their armory and issue them out constantly and they are never rotated or carried with less ammo in them yet they have worked for years. Some have failed but footlockers full of magazines are not uncommon where I work. They are seen as an expendable item - use them until they dont work and turn them in to be destroyed.  Military weapons also recieve much rougher treatment than most civilian weapons. These things are capable of tremendous abuse if you will clean and lubricate them regularly.

I voted no. Seems if the weapon was designed to hold so many rounds, spring fatigue shouldn't be an issue.  Just a guess,no experience.
