Taking Pics is not something Ive ever been good at but just the same here is my Kimber Super America 270 WSM with the new Leo VX-3 4.5x14x40 Long Range with Custom Dial System, Low Profile Turrets. Also a Cobra Sling I had made buy Dick Murray out of Texas, Dick is a great guy and does even better work. This Kimber has only been shot a few times and I look forward to doing some huntin with it this fall using light loads. The mounts for the scope I just installed . Im just not really happy with them because of the way the rear mount hangs over the chamber . Ive ordered some Warnes from SWFA. Thanks for all your help on this project guys! JF |

I should also point out that the Rifle Slings by Dick Murray are the Best Ive found anywhere. If you notice the leather is wrapped around (built around) each swivel. This is extra work on the MFG's part and works very well to keep the metal from digging in or even marring the wood on the stock. Ive owned several rifles where the worst damage ever done to the stock was from the swivles digging into the wood from just everyday hunting use. This stock is a AAA Claro Walnut stock and is now protected from that type of damage. |

Nice Rifle!
Looks great, but I know what you mean about the rear base overhanging the loading port looking a little ill-fitted.
They probably say they that have to make them like that because there isn't enough space between the screws on the rear bridge to accomodate the dovetail socket in the rear base.
Not sure they couldn't do it though, and it would look a lot better.

Well Ron,
A standard type mount where one Dovetail ring is used in the front but no Dovtail in the back. Or Warne makes a couple mounts and rings that do not have the hang over port problem. BUT what happens with these other bases and rings is the scope then cannot be moved as far forward in the rings for the kind of eye relief I like. The way it is set up in the picture right now, I would actually move the scope forward the max. amount, apprx. .750 if I were to take it out shootin or huntin.. I would put some Talley on there but they do not come in Gloss to match everything else.

You should place the scope forward in the rings until it is where you need it to be, and be happy with that setup. You really have no other options that I'm aware of for that rifle, if you don't want anything over the port, yet need to move forward a little more than it is.

Ok I will move it where I need it and tighten it down as soon as Rancid Coolaid sends me some torque specks so I do not leave any rings marks on the scope. It will be fine plus save me another 100.00 to add to my Cooper Fund, say anyone want to add to the Cooper Rifle fund out there? I promise to send pics, better one s too! Ohh, I did not think so.

Very nice looking rifle, Julio!
S&K makes rings/bases for Kimber that don't overhang the ejection port. They are very sleek, good looking rings. I don't know of any rings that have a cleaner, nicer appearance than these. I have 3 sets of them, and they have always worked very well for me. They are also available in gloss. Here are the matte versions on my Kimber 84. |

Ted,
You are going to have to teach a class on taking pictures! I do travel ya know. Yes I love the looks of those mounts and I looked them up on the web sight...They just will not work with the scope I have.. Dang! This means I may have to save for another rifle and put those rings/bases with the Kalhes on it. I really like the scope too!

If the eye relief is right for you in the pics you posted at the beginning of this thread, I believe the S&K's will work. It looks like you still have enough scope tube behind the mounts you are currently using that the rings will still fit on the tube when moved back 1/2" or so. Take a look at my pic again. Notice that the rear ring is forward of the rear mount screw hole for the base. In your pic, even if the ring was even with the rear mount screw hole, you'd still be able to fit it onto your scope tube without changing the position of the scope at all. But it isn't with the S&K mounts -- the ring is forward of the rear screw hole. The rear screw hole spacing is the same for the Kimber 84 and 8400.
Or, am I looking at this wrong? Edited by RifleDude - July/19/2009 at 14:05 |

If the scope is OK where Julio's pics have it, the S&K mounts would work, but I gather that he wants it forward an additional .75 inches, in which case they will not work.

He said the eye relief is correct for him when the scope is mounted as shown in these pics:
http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=18254 If that's the case, then there is no way around having to use extension bases or extension rings, unless a 1-piece Picatinny base is used. Either way, having the scope that far forward will not permit him to use mounts that don't overhang the ejection port. |

Great looking rifles JF and rifledude. Rifledude, do you prefer the S&Ks or the Conetrols? I have used only Talley and Warne mounts and have been very happy. On the Conetrol website, they go to lengths to let you know they are the originator of that type of mount. Just curious.

I like both, and both have virtues. The Conetrols are more nicely finished IMO, especially in the polished versions, but the S&K mounts are simpler to install and cost less. The S&K rings are 1 piece straps you wrap around the scope tube and the cone screws in the bases engage the ring studs to hold them together. The Conetrol rings are 3 pieces, but are machined and finished so well, when assembled, they look like 1 piece. Both are available for just about any rifle you can think of.
Conetrol is the originator of projectionless rings and the cone screw base/ring attachment method. S&K undoubtedly copied the base/ring attachment method, but I like the way they grooved the entire circumference of the ring studs, which should allow for more rotational self-alignment in my view vs the fixed dimples on the Conetrol ring studs. But, I really don't know which is "better." Neither company does a very good job of advertising their product, with black and white ads and small illustrations in magazines. I think it's really a question of which you like the looks of better. |

JF, really nice rifle. Personally, the mounting issues probably have more to do with over scoping a short action rifle. Just a thought.

I believe the scope is a 30mm tube so that limits some options. I really like the dual dovetail system for simple reliablility and would live with the over hang so long as it did not effect the ejecting of empty brass or being able to load the rifle. I will say that the rings on Ted's rifle are quite attractive but I dont know if they have them for the 30mm in gloss.
