I have decided on a Pentax 80 thanks to all the great info gleaned from this form. Now my question is what should I look for in a tripod and head? I mainly will use it for long range prairie dog hunting and paper punching while it doubles as my wife's birding scope in the house. Ultra light weight is not an issue as the scope isn't what I consider a carry scope. Thanks for any light you can shed on the subject for me.

For a head, I highly recommend this one:
It is a pistol-grip head and is easy to move, just pull the "trigger", adjust, let go, and it is rock-solid. It is a Manfrotto 322RC2 (http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/pid/2319?livid=80&lsf=80&child=2) It ain't cheap, but it is the best I've seen or used. |

+1 Also Manfrotto has a rebate until Aug 31st when you purchase a head and legs.
Good choice with the Pentex, I love mine. |

I wou;d second the motion for a "trigger-grip" type head. My wife and I have used a similar head on our really serious big Bogen for a long time now, and it is by far the easiest way to adjust a really big scope.

Just to eliminate any confusiong Bogen and Manfrotto are the same company now under the Manfrotto name. I have never had a trigger/ squeeze grip type head but have used ball heads and mechanical gear heads made by Gitzo that are very good and rather spendy but they were better than the Bogen heads that were made when I bought them almost 20 yrs ago and they still work great. Here is a link to the one R C has. http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/BG1359/ This is the gear driven head I have but Gitzo used to market them this one when you turn the crank it slightly raises or lower it very smoothly. This is the best head I've ever run across.
