I had a weak moment and bought another rifle todayYippeeShe's a Remington 700 SPS Stainless in 223 Remington. I'll use her for target, varmints, i.e. coyotes, woodchucks, fox, etc and if the sh*t ever hits the fan I can use her on deer if needed. What do you think I should top her off with, I want to keep the cost within the $600- $700 range.
Thanks,
Sam

I have one of the 3-9x42 Super Snipers and I really like it but I prefer to dial in correction when shooting at long range.  If you intend this for a hunting gun you may or may not want target / tactical knobs. There are advantages both ways.  The Zeiss Rapid Z reticles are very nice but like most balistic reticles they only work at the highest power and if you are hunting in low light the minute you dial the power down the only thing that works is the center X  everything else will shoot over the top of the range is is supposed to be.  Zeiss does have a really cool balistic calculator that helps figure out which of their reticles best suites your needs. For a hunting scope I think the 6x42 Leupold FX3 with long range duplex is a fine choice. Center at 200 first dot at 300 second dot at 400 where the line goes thin to thick at 500  more or less - you have to do a little field testing to see.  Thing is that at 42mm a 6x gives a 7mm exit eye pupil.   I think I would be a lot happier with the 3-9x42 Super Sniper than with a Zeiss but I'm bias toward tactical knobs. I also really like the mil dot reticle combined with the 1/10 mil clicks.  Shoot a hole in the target measure it from center of the target using the mil dot reticle than dial in that much correction in 1/10 mil clicks.  It's like duh why arent all scopes like this.

Right now I'm thinking she will be used to shoot wood chucks out to 200 - 250 yards or so and coyotes at various ranges, I would like to keep her as light as possible, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Sam

Thanks Earl, how about this one do you guys think this is too much for a 223 with a 24" barrel for coyote and woodchuck hunting? http://swfa.com/Leupold-45-14x40-VX-3-Riflescope-P12681.aspx

For $700 you can buy Swaro American Hunter 3-9x36 with #4 reticle from the Samplelist.  If you are looking for a light weight allround scope, that one is the best available.  Since Swaro is replacing American Hunter with Z3, you can get a great deal on it.

ILya,
The #4 is my favorite reticle but for this rifle I've been thinking maybe a ballistics reticle system, not sure yet.
Thanks,
Sam
