My son wants a Simmons 4X14X44 Pro-Hunter rifle scope with the "Smart Reticle". I had problems years ago with the Simmons 44 Mag. scope with the same reticle. Have the Pro-Hunter models improved?

I've got a 2-7x32 MS ProHunter.  So far it's been shot on a .30-06,a .300 magnum, and now sits on a 9.3x62 waiting to be tested.  I like this scope ALOT. John Barsness, who posts here and may have some remarks for you,tested one(3-9 version) when they first came out. He still has that scope and uses it on various rifles. They made some changes on them after they first came out and were hard to find. Mine was backordered for a year and a half.

You haven't said what rifle/cartridge the scope will be used with or the type of hunting/shooting he'll be doing. That would be of some help to us.  There are other choices in that price range also. This being one:

The scope is to be mounted on a 30/06 Weatherby Vanguard using one piece Talley mounts. My son prefers the "Smart Reticle" design. My price range is two to three hundred dollars. I am concerned how this type of reticle can take 30/06 recoil.

What does he plan to hunt? At what ranges?

Personally I'd go for a better quality scope. I own Bushnells, Nikons, Weavers, and a couple of Simmons ProHunters. The ProHuter that I'm using right now is on a precision target 22lr and it's good enough for now, but it's so lightly built that I'd have trouble trusting its Chinese construction to hold up well on a centerfire. Instead I'd look at these scopes in this order. None of them are made in China.
