I haven't bought a new rifle in a while so I have rationalized getting something lightweight for my "ranch rifle".  My Kimber 84 in .260 works great but it's so nice I hate to bang it up.  I'm thinking about a Weatherby Ultra Lightweight in 240 Wby Mag.  It needs to kill 300-400lb hogs at 100 yds and my 243 does that fine with the right bullet.
I immediately think the Leupold VX 3 2.5-8X36 is the right scope for this rifle.  It's got to be light and tough.   What would y'all suggest?

If you want light and tough, I think your right. The 2.5-8 is perfectly proportioned for a light weight rifle.

I have had a Weatherby 240 mag since they came out, still one of my favorites, flat shooting for varmints. I just wish the factory 240 ammo would come down in price to at least reasonable. If you don't hand load the ammo prices are way high.

I just put a VX3 (2.5-8 X 36) on a lightweight X bolt 300WSM. It's about perfect on that rifle.

Tikka in 30-06 (cheap AVAILABLE  ammo) Leupold VX 3   6x42 with long range duplex.
100 yds 300 lb hogs  right bullet  wrong bullet either way it will kill them just fine.

I had thought about a 30-06.  I kind of feel bad that I don't own one.  I'd have to get a heavier rifle though; with my shoulder problems recoil is an issue.

How about a M1a
SOCOM Devil

these are high on my list of favorites but see Horniday's new load manual for reduced loads for service rifle and use a primer pocket uniformer if loading. Also dont use over a 175 gr bullet best at 150 to 168.

300-400 lb hogs at 100yd.s ..Why not just get a 308 ? cheap ammo, tons of rifles, it'll get'er done just fine ... I like my Weatherby 's too, but for big hogs at 100 yd.s, it will save you a bunch of $$$ ...unless you just want a Wby

.308 would be a good choice although light rifles in that caliber produce a pretty good kick.  I reload, so ammo isn't an issue.  .243 would be a wiser choice that the .240WM.  It wouldn't give up much, but I'm kind of wanting something a little more exotic.  .260 is the perfect rifle for me but it's being chambered in fewer and fewer rifles it seems.
I think I may try the 6X42 FX 3 for the scope.

I have one of the older models and it is a great all around scope. It is bright and crystal clear. It is a no frills scope and a tank because of it.

I would look at a Tikka T3 Lite in 30-06. All Tikkas are long action so there's no advantage to a shorter cartridge. My 30-06 weighs in at 6.2lbs bare, or just over 7lbs scoped. A limbsaver is a must on a rifle that light and really makes it pleasant to shoot. Tikkas are also amazingly accurate and known for a smooth action and outstanding trigger. I have a nice light Nikon Team Primos on mine and a Burris 3-10x40 Signature Select on my 300WM.

A second option is a Howa Ranchland or 2N1 Youth in 308. They are a tad heavy at 7.5lbs bare but are built like a tank. Both  of these come with a short 20" barrel and the the 2N1 comes with both 12.5 and 13.5 LOP stocks making them handy in thick brush. The photo shows a 2N1 youth (top) with a full sized Howa 1500.

Another good option is an AR15 in 6.8 SPC. A Speer 110gr Pro Hunter SP leaving the barrel at just under 2600fps should ruin the average pigs day. I just wish Savage CZ would chamber the 6.8 in their 527 Carbine because the cartridge is optimised for a 16" barrel. A

Thanks for the input.  Nice rifles there, Scholling.  I guess I could use a heavier rifle in a bogger caliber.  This is not a rifle I'm going to be carrying very far.  .308 is a great caliber, too.

Get a Browning BAR 30-06 with BOSS... recoil is not an issue (you will always need ear protection, though... it's LOUD)  You can "tune" the BOSS and shoot as well as ANY bolt gun, except maybe a Browning Stalker with BOSS...
