I just recently got a Marlin 336 in 30-30. I have never used a scope, but I would like to add one to this new Marlin. I can never see taking a shot past 200 yards, with 150 yards being the realistic maximum range where I would be hunting.

I was thinking about the Weaver Classic V 1-3x20mm. I was just wondering if anyone had any other recommendations in the $200 range? I don't really want to go with a scout setup, so it would be mounted normally.

That little Weaver is probably just about perfect.

I agree..........Under $200 and for your Marlin imo as well, that 1-3x20 V3 will be the best choice for hunting at 200 yards and less. It is the right magnification for the cartridge and the right magnification for the conditions you will hunt in.

Also imo, the straight tubed scopes look better on a short to moderate ranged handy lever.

I have the Weaver 1-3x20 on my Marlin 308 and I am very happy with it.  The little scope has plenty of power for 200 yards.  I also have a Sightron Big Sky 1.25-5x20 or my BLR .270 that is excellent.  It's going to cost you more but I don't think you would be disappointed in the Sightron.  For me, me key is not to overwelm your lever gun.  I think you would be satified with either of these scopes.  I also have a Vortex Diamondback 2-7 that might be a good option for under $200.  I just ordered another Diamondback for my .270 Savage.

I haven't played with the Weaver 1-3 but they could get feedback

another option at a tad more money would be the Nikon Monarch 1-4 with the german #4 reticle

probably a better scope in low light due to the glass and reticle but a tad heavier

I am seriously considering one for my 6.8 for daytime stalking and switching to a big illuminated scope for night time hunting

I use a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7X32MM on a Mossberg 464 30-30 WIN. Works great for hogs and deer in the heavey bush we hunt in Alabama.

My first thought would be some type of scout scope set up to keep it light and fast.  I think there are several scopes that could be traditionally mounted but  I like these scout scopes for a brush gun.

What is the advantage with a scout setup in a lever action? I can understand that setup with a mil-surp bolt-action so you can still use stripper clips.

Like I said, I'm still a complete newbie when it comes to optics.

The advantage is ease of mounting on some rifles and use with both eyes open.

The disadvantages are a very narrow field of view and the balance point of the rifle is moved forward.

It's pretty much a love it or hate it thing. I don't love them.

some people REALLY like the scout setup as they don't like a scope mounted on the receiver of a lever action as it makes the gun a little less easy to carry vs a non scoped one

I have tried it on a 45/70 guide gun, it works fine

stick with a non-scout set up, keep the mag low and consider a fixed power.  the weaver is fine.  i have a very low profile see thru set up on mine and can easily use my fixed sights.  everbody  invisions these 1 inch high see thru mounts, but they are probably at most 3/8 of an inch high and my scope is easy to bring to my cheek weld without problems.
