I have been building a casual paper punching and varmint rifle lately on a budget and I was set on the 6-24x40 Bushnell 4200 Elite. The scope seemed to be an ideal choice with it's overall balance of features in the sub $500 class of scopes with at least 20x of magnification power. However I have heard several recommendations for the 6-20x40 Weaver Grand Slam, the Weaver looks to be a nice scope but I know very little about them, I also see close to the price of the Grand Slam is the 6-24x42 Weaver Classic V24. So is the Bushnell better as to justify its higher price when compared to the Weavers, and of the two Weaver scopes which do you prefer and why. Any other recommendations are welcome, the requirements are a zoom scope with a maximum zoom of at least 20x, a plex type reticle (will consider a mil-dot) and it must be made in the United States, Japan, or Europe and cost no more than $500. I will be shooting at distances ranging from 100 to 500 yards.

Weaver Classic is not as good as Grand Slam or Elite 4200.

Other option in your price range are Burris Signature Select 6-24x44, Sightron S2 6-24x42, Sightron S2 6.5-20x50 (with side parallax), Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20x50, Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44.

Optically, Elite 4200, Sightron S2 and Signature Select are about equal.  Nikon Monarch and Weaver Grand Slam are up there as well.  Sightron S2 and Weaver Grand Slam ahve the best W/E adjustments.  Sightron, I think, has the largest adjustment range.

If you want to save some money, Sightron S2 6-24-42 can be had for under $400, I think and it has the optical quality to compete with anything this side of Zeiss Conquest.  Sightron S2 would be my choice.

Otherwise,  look at weight, size, eye relief, adjustment range, etc and see what works best for you.  From an optics stand point all of the scopes mentioned are quite good (with Burris Fullfield II being a little worse optically but having an advantage of a larger objective lense and a larger exit pupil).

Sightron, I believe, is as durable as any other scope out there, bar none.  It originally made its reputation by surviving a 10000 round test a few years ago that killed a bunch of high end scopes.

Also, Sightron has a lifetime replacement warranty.  If it breaks they'll swap your scope for a new one.  Although I have a couple of Sightrons and I've had no need to send them back.

In all fairness all of the decent scope sill be durable enough.

I thought you were building a varmint gun of some sort.  Why question about 338 Winmag then?

My gun is going to be in 0.308, I think I am going to go with the Weaver Grand Slam at this point.

Grand Slam is a good scope and one of the best for the money.  Micro-Trac adjustments are also excellent right out to the edge of the adjustment range.

This would be the best choice to make. The Grand Slam is compare to the best of the best when it comes to optics. When it comes down to price the Grand Slam is hard to beat. They come with the Micro-Trac 4 point adjustment system, just what you want in a scope ....

Money talks. Most often mine says good-bye

The Weaver Grand Slam Series are one of the best kept secrets in optics.  They are brighter and clearer than the Classic and you will see this if you use it often in low light.  Although the Grand Slam does use the Micro-Trac Adjustments they do not offer a target style turret like the Classic has.  If you plan to use it mostly in day light and plan to make frequent adjustments to the elevation turret you should consider the Classic 6-24.  The Classic is 4x magnification too just like your Elite 4200 (6-24 instead of 6.5-20).

Well, I suppose it depends on what you consider a varmint.

Personally, I am very fond of my 22-250, but to each his own.

That particular varmint certainly deserved a 338 slug between the eyes.
