Borrowed a friends chrony today. The load test was 178 gr. moly coated A-max's over 64.5 gr. of IMR 4350 with CCI 250 primers in once fired winchester brass. Temp was about 80, my elevation is about 3200 ft. With a string of 8 rounds fired hi vel. was 2977fps, lo was 2931fps, and the average was 2957fps. While this load has been very accurate, was wondering if I should try for more velocity? Oh btw, the rifle is a Savage model 11 with a 24" barrel

hotter loads helps some guns, and hurts others. If you are showing no pressure signs, you can keep going hotter. I would play with the seating depth of the bullet a little. Get it closer to the lands and see what happens.
5/8" is a pretty good group, especially if it is just for hunting. |

The same buddy that loaned me the chronograph also had the new hornady manual. There max charge for 180 class bullets and IMR 4350 is 66.5gr., while all other info I had seen stopped at 65gr. So it kinda got me wondering. I will probably go up .5 grains, the work up with .2gr increments from there.

Just watch for velocity readings that aren't consistant with what you've gotten so far like a sharp increase or even a slight drop. Nosler shows the .300 WSM maxed out at 3024 w/65gr of IMR4350 so I wouldn't expect much more.

Each individual rifle has its own tolerance point for max loadings. 66.5 grains can be worked up too in one rifle showing no pressure signs, while another may show some pressure signs at 66.5 grains, which would then need to be backed off by a grain or so.
If you see no pressure signs then increase by 1/2 grain increments. When small pressure signs are first seen, back off 1/2 grain and call that maximum for that rifle.

I am using 66.5g of w760 and getting 3158fps @1400 ft and 78 degrees.
The max load in Hornady is 67.5g but the top speed there shows only to be 3000fps.
Iam getting more speed for some reason with lower loads.
1/4 inch groups @100yds.
178g Hornady A-max bullets
66.5g W760

Winchester WLRM Primers
COAL 2.860"

What concerns more so than the charge is the velocity your getting. Nosler got a max of 3029fps (right around Hornady's max of 3000fps) with 64gr of 760 using a 180gr bullet. With your 25"bbl you'd be expected to pick up extra fps IF Nosler and Hornady used 24" or less bbls. I'd REALLY like to see the recorded velocities as you worked up to that final load if you could. My initial impression is that your over the top.

Concerned me also when I saw the results.
Iam currently lessening the powder in order to get her down around 2950fps.
My biggest problem was bolt became sticky or harder to open.
This was not a max load, according to Hornady's book. I still had around 1g left before max.
I was attempting to get her speed at 2950fps...

Darn not being able to edit.
Hornady used a 24" barrel.
And like I said, I used the same recipe as Hornady accross the board.
I did not chrono early beacuse, I just got the chrono.
Really funny thing is, usually the loads, from the books, are slower than they say.
IDK, Just know Iam lowering the load. I don't like the sticky bolt and that much speed aint worth blowing the gun....

Your doing the SMART thing! Do you have a chrono reading using 64 grs? 64grs is Noslers max in a minimum spec bbl and chamber which I doubt yours is. I use to average all reliable max data I could find and use it as my max watching for pressure signs. Once I got a chrono I started to watch for unusal velocity increases or (after last yr) decreases as my powder charge was increased. If I have neither and reach Noslers max velocity,I stop.

I was thinking of suggesting RL-22 if 760 doesn't work out for him. Did you chrono that load, pyro?

it is a friend of mine, a friend whom i consider more knowledgeable than i, told me that chrono's in his eyes are the devil. curiosity killed the cat, is what his exact words were to me. he said these damn things just get you in trouble and end up costing you more money. i said why?? he said well when you get all wrapped up in speed you sometimes forget about whats really important, accuracy. i said good point, if i care to know my speeds i will shoot at his place.
