hi everyone. looking for some advice on making a purchase of a plain 4x scope.
The rifle is a Ruger 77 RSI in 250-3000 savage caliber. This is a little carbine and don't want a huge scope. Only for deer hunting.
Costs of the scope at this time and for the future are a concern. I've been using bargin basement scopes for a lot of years and they have been ok. i just want a bit nicer scope before i die for this carbine.
under consideration at this time:
nikon pro-staff 4x. i understand it is marketed as a rimfire scope and centerfire scope. is it stout enough really for a centerfire?
weaver 4x (new foreign ones)
pentax game seeker 4x-----not much found about this one
i'm trying to keep this under $150 for my needs and have a decent scope on the gun for when the girl inherits the gun.
or should i just pass this year and save money and get a leupold 4X?
never have cared for variable scopes. just want a good solid 4x for a pickup gun.

You could get by with the weaver or the leupold. I'll post a couple that I like better and you pick:

The key word here is "TRUCK." That makes me lean toward the Leupold. I think that the Zeiss at an extra fifty bucks is a better deal. But if the thing is going to be in a truck most of the time I can't see spending the extra money for the glass that is going stay dusty.
The next point in favor of the Leupold is a better choice in reticles. You can get a 4a reticle in the Leupod. You may have to send it in for an upgrade to get it, but you can get it. I don't like a lot of the plex reticles as they clutter the upper part of the field of view in direct line of what is happening behind the target.

I have the Pentax 4x Gameseeker. Good glass, good, repeatable adjustment. I had mine mounted on a .458 Lott, but moved it to .458 WinMag (both Ruger #1s). It has been excellent. Glad I got it.

Weaver is fine... if you don't want higher quality glass with better coatings at a cheaper price.

I tried a couple of Gameseeker scopes when they first came out and they were pretty nice, especially considering the price.
Between Wever K4 and the Gameseeker, I would probably go with the Weaver, artly because I am not very excited with the Precision Plex holdover reticle. Another option that is not a whole lot more expensive is Sightron S2 4x32 which is a nicer scope. ILya

Out of those you listed in your price range the best choice in my opinion is the Weaver K4. I'm just not a fan of Prostaffs. I am a fan of Weavers and their K4 is a decent scope.

i appreciate all the replies.
looks like there are no fans of the pro staff 4x so its off the list.
been researching and searching the forum here. looks like a fixed 4x ain't popular no more.
Read up what i could find on the pentax. References to being buris produced. Don't know about that rectile in it as it does on 2nd thought looks a bit busy. I'd never use the features and just don't know if the busy recticle would be more of a distraction than help.
Right now it appears that weaver just might get the nod. Everyone keeps mentioning the sightron. Went to their home page and the sightron does appear impressive. Also liked the lifetime warranty. There was no mention of where the sigtron is produced.
Is the sightron a korea or china scope and imported? or are they assembled over here?
This sightron II 4X seems to be more compact, better eye relief, larger field of view. and it runs roughly $50 more than the weaver thru the SWFA.
Hate to trouble yall. But does anyone have experience with this sightron 4x? I could not locate any reviews of the 4x. Is the quality going to be head and shoulders above the weaver k4 or is it just a tad better and not worth the xtra expense? Talking glass here.

Some people buy scopes because they like the name. I buy scopes because they suit a purpose. The Pentax glass and coatings are better than the Weaver, the Pentax is FULLY multicoated and the Weaver is multicoated. I KNOW the Pentax will stand up to heavy recoil, because it has withstood both the .458 Lott and the .458 WinMag, both using Hornady Dangerous Game loads. I haven't tried the Weaver, so I don't know. As for a "busy" reticle, a Horus reticle is "busy", the Pentax is not. The BDC is good, but you DO have to shoot the ammo you expect to use and record the results. No free lunch. However, if you like the Weaver, which many people do (I don't have anything against Weaver, except quality has fallen over the years) you should get one. I may get one someday, but just don't think it is the best choice for what you are looking for. Doesn't mean the Weaver won't serve you well.

i own one sightron sII in a variable, great optics, was hard to mount because of the rifle and short objective eyepiece distance, but overall and excellent scope. they are made in japan. i have a weaver on a remington guide rifle and i would have to say, while the two are not in equal rank in their model lines, the sightron is higher in their line, the sightron optics are slightly better. i do not think you will go wrong with either one. take a look through both, the prices here seem pretty darn good. i am new here and looking at their prices compared to local joints and other internet dealers, i can tell you, i will buy from here next time.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Weaver, as many have mentioned.
If the Pentax is anything like the version Burris made, it should be very good. My Burris 4x has seen 30.06, 7mag and .375 H&H through the years. It has been extremely reliable and the optics are very clear. |

I had a sightron SII 4x32 for a while and it was a nice scope optically and it had a lot of eye relief. However, it was fairly critical as you had to have your eye EXACTLY the right distance from the eye piece to get a good sight picture and EXACTLY right behind the center or it would black out . Also, it was designed for short action guns so it has very little mounting room. Optically it was very good and it had the plex reticle. The Sightron plex is a WIDE PLEX which means the outer heavier lines of the reticle dont come as close to the center as a standard plex. Look up Leupold Wide plex and compare it to the Leupold standard plex and you will see what I mean. Reticle thickness wise they were just about like a Bushnell duplex or Nikon Monarch niko plex just a tad wider spacing in the middle as I said. One thing I can say is that the reticle was a wire reticle but I never noticed the reticle turn a bronze color from light reflecting off of it like some Bushnells do.

Incorrect. From Weaver's site. "Classic K-Series™ fully multi-coated Japanese optics". I own a Gameseeker (although not a 4x) and it's a pretty good scope for a cheapie and I hang on to it as a spare. It's not in the same league as my Weaver Classics but I'd rate the Pentax Gameseeker as optically anyway one of the better Chinese scopes. For what it's worth the reviews of the 4x Gameseeker on Midway are very mixed at best. Now if you were talking about a Philippines made Lightseeker that would be a different matter but we're also talking about a huge price difference. Edit: To answer the OP's question Sightron and Weaver are Japanese. The Pentax Gamseeker is Chinese, and I'm not sure where the Prostaff is made. Edited by sholling - June/14/2009 at 19:25 |

I think Koshkin has about 9 of them - he gets one free for each ten thousand he sells.
You can feel confident buying it if Koshkin recommends it.
My only sightron is a S1 3-9x40 mil dot and it has held up very well. (and I only bought it to see what Koshkin was liking about them) they are very nice and reasonably priced for what you get add $200 more and you can get an equivalent scope from a bigger name but it wont be any better. The one I had WAS NOT fully multicoated, stated on the box "multicoated". I have not researched them in a while. If they are fully multicoated now, more power to them. However, the Pentax I have is superior to the Weaver I compared against. While I try to "buy American" the fact that the Pentax was "made in China" doesn't really detract from its quality. I can only speak from the experience I have had with it, not from the ads.
