I was watching "Sighting In", May have been "American Shooter", it was one of those shows hosted by Jim Scouten on the Outdoor Life channel.  Anyway, they showed what might be the ultimate tactical optics set-up for an M4 type system.  They had an ACOG with the little red dot Docter sight mounted on top of the ACOG.  The ACOG was used for long range shooting and the Docter for close in stuff.  Does anyone know anything about this set-up?  Is it a custom job or can you just buy the two optics and combine them youself?  I am very curious about this one.

Why.  With practice and getting used to it the ACOG can the job of a red dot sight and a long distance shooter out to 800 yards, I've done it.

I don't see any reason to mount a red dot sight on top of an ACOG, but I've used the ACOG a whole lot and it may be easy for me.

The main reason is that I would be the only kid on my block with one.

You'll see alot of variations on the primary/secondary
sighting system, espessially among the game gun crowd.

Use the Acog as a normal scope at distance, and for close
work use the Acog ocular ring as a ghost ring sight;
place the ring around your target, press the trigger x2,
transistion to the next target.

By keeping your mental activity confined to target
location/identification and concentrating on a single
sight picture you're less apt to do something really
dumb........like get shot whilst trying to remember which
sight for which distance.

Agreed.  The ACOG was made to do both.
