I'm planning to get a fixed power scope for my AR-15, so that I can test out reloads. My budget is about $500-$600 for the scope itself (not including mount). I have a 3-9 Zeiss Conquest on my bolt action and I've been happy with that so far; but the only fixed scope that ziess offers is a 4x scope that's in my budget range. Ideally I want a 6x or 10x scope. Can anyone offer a recommendation?

IORs are very nice scopes, I have a fixed 4x and two variables and love all of them.

I'll through this 6x into the mix. The 6x42 Leupolds are great scopes that are crystal clear and rock solid.

My question is why would you put a hunting scope on an AR? The IOR 6x tactical is in your stated price range and has the "functionality" of a tactical scope... for a tactical rifle. True, you can hunt with an AR-15, but still don't understand the use of a hunting scope on that rifle. Just not aesthetically pleasing. IOR is a good choice, but I would go with the tactical sope.

The Leupold I mentioned is very close to the discontinued tactical model of the 6x42. It is certainly usable for hunting but is better for target and competition use.

How big is the AR - barrel length?
The SS 10X would be great for load development but it is not a small scope. I have the 4X IOR hunter and like it, glass is good, I don't make dope changes on it. Kickboxer's question is a good one, why hunting scope on an AR? There are reasons I can think of for doing it, but not sure you have those needs. If the interest is in IOR specifically, their hunting scopes are good, none of the problems associated with some tactical scopes, very good glass for the money. |

It has a 20" barrel. I'm not going to use the scope for hunting. I'm going to use it for load development and target work. I specified the "hunting" ior scope because I don't really need the additional expense of an illuminated reticle.

I hate to break this sad news but the 6x42 IOR scopes both tactical and hunting are GONE BYE BYE. The Leupold is a solid suggestion although this model has 1/8 moa clicks. The other reticles in FX3 6x42 can be custom ordered from Leupold with eihter 1/4 moa target knobs or M1 tactical knobs.
If all you are doing is shooting paper in daylight doing load development I like this much better:
