There is alot more ammo combinations in 22lr. Less expense is also a factor with 22lr.

The 22lr is a great plinker, but I could never give up my .17 for it's ability to be very accurate at 100 yards, and beyond. I guess for me it would depend on the ranges you plan to shoot.

I hate to sound all wishy-washy, but I think there's good reason to have both in ones arsenal. If I could only have one or the other, my vote would be for the .22LR. Ammo is so inexpensive, there's such a huge variety of ammo, you can find it anywhere that sells ammo, and there's a much better selection of rifles in .22 LR that it just makes sense. Plus, I just think every serious shooter needs at least one good .22. I know I shoot my .22's far more than I do any other guns I have. They are just so much fun, they don't make much noise, and they are inexpensive to plink with.
The .17 HMR is a blast to shoot as well. It basically triples the effective range of the .22LR, and is usually far more accurate past 50 yards than the .22 by virtue of its more streamlined, more consistent jacketed bullets. It does a good job of bridging the gap between the .22 LR and the small .17, .20, and .22 centerfires.
Don't overlook the .17 Mach 2 either. It never gained the popularity of the .17HMR, and I'm not sure why. It is very accurate; maybe more so than the HMR, has 2/3rds the effective range of the .17HMR, but fits in rifles originally designed for .22LR, so there are many platforms easily adapted to the .17 M2. It isn't as loud as the .17HMR and it doesn't tear up squirrels and other small game as much as the HMR often does. The only downside I see to it is ammo isn't quite as available as .17HMR ammo is, but ammo for neither .17 rimfire is as readily available or as cheap as good ol' .22 LR.
Cheaper ammo = more shooting!

Yes to all of the above. If you don't have a rimfire already, though, the .22 is only way to go.

A 22 is a must have gun due to low cost ammo, but the 17 is much more accurate and much more deadly there really is no comparison accuracy wise because the quality of the projectile is so much higher quality on a 17 and the velocity makes it a very flat shooter. A 17 would probably be a really good choice.
