What do you think is the most accurate out of the box factory rifle? What has performed better than you had hoped it would without any additional work.

Mine was a Remington Sendero 7mm (first gen.).
I wish I still had that rifle. Edited by mike650 - May/31/2009 at 10:07 |

Does the Remington Custom Shop qualify as a factory gun? If so, it is definitely my 700 African Plains Rifle in 300 WM.

Guy in one of my classes shot a bipod prone 0.093 group with a scoped pss that he assembled ( scope, base, rings ) at the range 1st class day.
Backed it with a 0.091 group.
There's good factory and not so good factory. Custom makers do good business 'cause there's no consistant factory.

Well, since we are voting on "specialty" weapons, my PSG-1 was the most accurate of anything.

It'd be close for me. I've had a few 700s that did great things without tuning; however, my Tikka 300WM was a tack-driver from the first day.
Given that the Remmy was a heavy-barrel PSS and the Tikka was a thin-barrel stalking gun, I was more impressed with the the accuracy of the Tikka - though, in faireness, I guess I expected allot more of the Remmy. |

This would have to be a long list.
Remington 700's have long had a great OTB reputation, but I generally find the average 700 will shoot better with a little tuning. I have also owned rifles from Browning A-Bolt to Weatherby Vanguard (alphabetically) that have REALLY shot with even less tuning than the average 700, including Howas, Rugers and Savages--especially Savages. And of course the Vanguards are Howa-made. This winter I bought a new South Carolina Winchester Model 70 in .300 WSM that started shooting very small groups right away. They have pretty much purged the gremlins there.
Many foreign rifles shoot very well too, from CZ to Sako to Tikka. In fact a little lightweight Sako 75 .308 was one of the few OTB big game rifles that shot genuine 3-shot 1/2" groups at 100 yards with FACTORY ammo, specifically Federal's with 150 Ballistic Tips. The rifle barely weighed 7 pounds with a scope. The trigger was also superb as it came. My CZ 550 9.3x62 started shooting just about any ammo under 1" out of the box, and I've owned several other CZ's that shot just as well if not better.
Then there are a bunch of rifles rarely seen in the U.S., though available here, that are extremely accurate. The Heym SR21 and SR30 are a couple. I own an SR21 in .300 Winchester Magnum that shoots like many custom rifles. Many European (and especially German) rifles shoot extremely well, but they aren't seen much here. They also tend to have better triggers than OTB American rifles, and not just because they're usually set triggers.
Even the Marlin lever rifles really shoot well today, and if we expand the discussion to rimfires then we are living in heaven compared to just 20 years ago. I have a Kimber .22 (the lowest grade, the Hunter, I believe it's called) that will group around 1/4" for 5 shots at 50 yards. Of course that's using Eley ammo, but Winchester Power Points go under 1/2" consistently.
In fact we are living in the golden age of factory rifle accuracy. I just about EXPECT any new rifle to shoot well these days, and they almost always do.

Out of the box? The Browning BOSS models. I have (2) Browning BOSS and a Winchester Model 70 BOSS and all three are load specific tuned and extremely accurate. My only complaint on the A-Bolt is the trigger and hard recoil pad.

I think my Vanguard Backcountry is the most impressive I've ever owned with it's favorite handload, with groups coming in at about 1/4 moa at 100. Pretty good for a pencil thin barrel that's fluted as well. My SUB MOA vanguard was very good with it's favorite factory load, running about 1/2". I haven't had too many other really accurate rifles, other than my .17 hmr savage, but my old man's Vanguard compact is the most accurate rifle I've ever had the pleasure to shoot. It seems no matter what you feed it, they all seem to go in the same hole. I'll inherit that bad boy someday though. All in good time of course.
