First and foremost, this gun was a tack-driver before it went off for a face-lift.  I've posted many pictures over the past year or so of this gun and its 1/2 and 1/3MOA groups out to 600 yards.

It recently got a Heritage and I found a smoking deal on a McMillan A5 stock.   H&S makes a good stock, but McMillans have a feel that defies description, you just gotta handle one.  This gun previously wore a USO Sn3, I like the new hheritage every bit as much, and the glass is better.

So, with a new stock comes a trip to the smith for a good bedding job, bottom metal fitting, barrel channel adjusting, then off to the refinisher.

She finally came home (in peices) and an hour with a few torque wrenches and a few levels (and a set of feeler guages) and all is right with the world.

Today ol' girl went to the range (and I forgot the camera, so I snapped a shot with the phone on the way home.)  I was going to take a pic of a target, but figured it wasn't too impressive, and it was my shooting rather than the rifle's that made it not that great.  The RSO asked if I could put 7 rounds in the same hole with her.  I said sure, and fired 8 rounds ricky tick. They strung a little and almost fit under a quarter - edges barely visible on both sides.  It was one hole, but not as tight as I would like. There were witnesses.  The rifle easily shoots 1/2MOA, but me,  8 shots down range in about 30 seconds not quite 1/2MOA, more like 5/8ths..

The bottom metal is vbull (not as drop-in as "drop-in" would seem.)  It takes standard AI magazines, is machined billet aluminum and fit and finish are great.  The mag engages quite securely and is rock solid.  If you need really good bottom metal and don't like the losseness of badger, consider vbull.  The mag release is far superior and lockup  is rock solid.

The brake is an Ed Vandenberg brake - the same guy who installed the brake, tuned the action, recrowned the barrel, bedded the stock, and fit the "drop in" bottom metal.  If you are in the Houston area and need a competent smith, I can ethusiastically recommend Ed, he is good people and a damn fine smith.

Soon, I'll get ol' girl out to the 600 yard line again and see what she does.  If past experiences repeat, it'll be more of the same old boring shooting: no matter how many times you pull the trigger, there's only one damn hole in the paper.

I'll trade you my Remington Sendero in 300 Win Mag, with it's most excellent Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50, for your off brand rifle and scope, and I absolutely promise not to tell anyone where I got it. That is if you throw in some boot to make it look fair. LOL.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

The cheek piece is a McMillan.  It is a metal piece covered in some manner of rubber.  It mounts by a hole cut into the stock and with an aluminum column on the underside of the cheek piece that slides into the hole - 2 bolts hold it in place, but I was shooting lefty so they are mounted on the opposite side.

With this mount, there are no pass-through holes in the stock, and the mounting is much more secure.  The piece also has the bolt cut-out pre-finished.

Don't get me wrong, Karsten makes a great piece, I own a few; but McMillan's is a more solid piece - and it damn sure better be for the price.

I can relate to A5 sticker shock.  Who would have ever guessed that the swivel studs on a PSS had a metal bolt plate built into the stock and that wood screw type swivel studs would get stuck half way in requiring you to break an inch hole out of the stock. Grenade

I really dislike the factory stock on my savage( pre accustock) . But am pretty scared of screwing up a bedding job. Also my chief complaint is the fore end being all floppy. The barrel is well free floated, but I shoot primarily off a bipod and I am mot sure if the weight of the rifle is pushing the stock against my barrel? Most bad groups are explained easily on the shooter but want help on how to prevent or stop this interference?

Consider dumping the stock for something more rigid.  You can spend allot o' time messing with a stock that will never be "good enough", or bite the proverbial bullet and get something that more meets your needs.

YES!  A buddy of mine had the exact same problem with his Savage with Tupperware stock.  The rifle itself was accurate, but the forend flexed too much.  When he changed out the stock, the rifle became a tackdriver.

Lose the stock and drop it into a quality synthetic or laminated stock, bed it properly, and I'm betting it will shoot much better.
