I am considering this 1-4 variable for an AR.
I read that there may be some issues when the magnification is used.
Anyone care to elaborate?
Any similarly price recommended alternatives?
thanks

I'd suggest a compact ACOG TA442 it's 1.5x with amber triangle good eye relief and very very fast on target tritium and fiber optic. Use a La Rue mount to go to flat top.

I do already have a Trijicon ACOG (TA31F) on my XCR and do like it quire a lot but was considering something with a variable magnification (like the one in the OP~Leupold MK4 CQ/T) for my regular AR. I do like Trijicon products too.

These TR24's look NICE but what is the major differences from the TR21 models ~ 1.25x4 (other than the 1x magnification)?

30mm tube that runs the whole length makes it easier to mount on most rifles. Knobs are different- better.

I own a CQ/T, here is my take on it.......
1. This scope below, whilst it may seem to have a better value, sure doesnt' seem as "rugged" as the CQ/T. I am not familiar with this particular scope, but the CQ/T seems to be built to witstand a grenade blast. Not sure that this one is.
2. If I had to do it all over again I probably would buy a fixed ACOG instead of the CQ/T... so perhaps that tells you something right there.
3. Since I own a CQ/T I do notice a LOT of CQ/T scopes in pictures from the front lines. I see a lot more ACOGS, but I do notice the CQ/T a lot too.... so perhaps that tells you something.

I have the CQT as well and like it a lot. Etched reticle and runs on AAs. As mentioned it is heavy and could probably be used as a club. I don't mind the weight and like the toughness aspect. I may be crazy but in this day and age I prefer AAs to tritium that will burn out.

I hadn't thought of that. The fact that it does take standard AA batteries is kind of refreshing. It has something like 8 illumination settings too including a variety for various night vision devices... so perhaps that means something.

Tritium WILL run out, there is no possibility of it not; however, it will be half as bright in 10 years as it is today. I consider that an advantage, not a liability. Optics that run on AAs are great for convenience, but nothing trumps tritium in the convenience factor: no battery change for 10 years, no on/off switch. Opinions vary. For IPSC shooting at "long" range on small targets. The senter dot of the Mark 4 might be too big.

Actually, I think it may very well be a better place ten years from now, at least for those of us who actually live through the years between now and then!
Something needs to happen pretty soon, that's for sure.

That's what I'm thinking. I have a ton of AAs. I don't have any tritium.
