Hello all, this is my first post, and I would sure be thankful for some expert advice. I'm looking to scope a 270WSM, I want to keep the rifle reasonably light and compact. The rifle will be used hard, carried in a saddle scabbard, on an ATV etc., so I need a tough scope. I want a mid powered variable and I am interested in the bullet compensating reticles, or some sort of multi-zero system. Price range would probably be $600 or less.
Which are the best of the bullet compensating reticles?
I've gone almost strictly to Leupold scopes over the past few years because of their toughness, and warranty. How do other scopes compare to Leupold in toughness, warranty, quality of optics, price, etc?
Are the bullet compensating reticles really any good, or should I spend my money on something that has better optics without the compensating reticle?
Thanks in advance for any help. |

I like the Burris ballistic plex reticle, the new B&C reticle from Leupold looks like a winner as well. For range compensating reticles I would go with Leupold or Burris for sure.

Tough call - at least you are giving us a lot of info to help with the decision.
I would have said Zeiss Conquest at first, since they are quite lightweight, however they don't have BDC reticles.
What kind of ranges are you looking at shooting at?
I would probably say either a Leupold or a Burris Signature or Black Diamond scope. They have excellent warranties as well.

A Leupold VXIII 2.5-8X36 with the Boone and Crockett reticle sounds just right for you. About 11 inches long and weighs about 11 oz. I've used one for about a year now and never found it lacking. 8X is plenty for hunting out to 300 or more yards and the 36mm objective is fine for all legal shooting, plus you can use low or extra low rings to keep the rig compact. Less than $500, too.

I hunt throughout the West, so I have some opportunities for pretty long shots. Shots out to 300, or even 350 yards aren't that big of a problem for me, but beyond that estimating holdover can be a little tricky which is why I am interested in the ballistic compensating reticles. I shoot a lot, and feel like given the right conditions (good rest, low wind, etc.) I could make shots out to 600 yards If I didn't have to estimate holdover. |
