Every year, I read about some hunter who has spent a cold night or two while lost or injured out in the woods. Given some of the places and conditions in which I hunt, I recently put together a lightweight insulated survival blanket and tested it out. The idea was to incorporate it into a improvised shelter using only the materials I commonly carry hunting, such as game bags and a tarp. I posted the details here: http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f23/survival-bivy-quilt-test-41635/
In this case, my intention was just to test the materials. In the past, I've improvised a variety of shelters, ranging from snow caves to lean-tos made with branches and have sometimes combined those materials. I also would make use of the terrain to get out of the elements and always carry matches. |

Nice test, Jon and thanks. You can't beat a vapor barrier for keeping heat inside and close to your body.

I thought about that and decided to park my pop up trailer in the appropriate place to shoot from - so I just roll the window open.

You should really get a turret mount so you don't have to let any cold air in. |

One of my favorites is (providing you have a fire going) how well keepin a number of hot rocks around the fire for switching out in what ever you are laying in can make a cold night not all that bad. I've seen a number of hard core 20 yr. old soldiers humbly ask the ole sarge if they could get one of those about 3 in the morning.
I miss takin care of soldiers. Carry on.

That's a good trick Sarge. I had one of my privates actually try to warm his privates using that trick. "MEDIC"

I carry a Wiggys bivy sac, bag and a aluminized bag, it's very compact and tough and makes a fair hammock, stretcher or sit shelter easily. Weighs in around 39oz with a cheap waterproof stuffsack. I once spent 2 nights in it in Colorado @ 10,800' and 12F while it snowed 40" and white out while "camping" under a fallen tree. It's a very warm combo and 100% waterproof even with 6" of snow on top. I did burn a hole the last day but have since fireproofed it with a bath in a solution of disodium octaborate tetrahydrate which also makes it fairly tick, chigger and antproof.

Sounds like he had more issues than the obvious! Did he learn the difference between his gun and his rifle?
