I have a good friend that is departing the world of the employeed (not by choice) but at least he can retire. He loves a good Scotch and several of us would like to supply him with a fine bottle to celebrate his departure. I am not a Scotch drinker, nor are any of the other gift givers.
If there are any Scotch drinkers out there I'm welcome to all suggestions. UHH, need to keep this under the $500 mark... and thats a stretch.

I don't drink the stuff, but own stock in Diagio. You can google them or Brown- Forman (part of Fortune Brands) and that covers a great deal of booze sold around the world. Diageo sells Johnny Walker and Johnnie Walker Blue is about 100 to 125 a Quart. That is a blend. Most of the scotch guys like it "neat" so they want a single malt or unblended. Otherwise you might as well drink Johnie Walker Black. Scotch has is made in differant regional breweries. So between the local minerals in the water and grains and the aging they all have a differant tast. The lowland (border with England) is supposed to be the most mellow. The stuff on the coast more exotic. I think it is the Isle of Skyy that produces the most exotic flavor by most standards. YMMV that should get you started. You might want a bottle of Johnie Green for everybody else ;)

So would you say all of these are in the 'smooth' catagory? I have at least heard of some of them.

You can't go wrong with Lagavulin or Oban, either. Another popular Islay single malt is Laphroig. That one will make a believer out of anyone.

Scooter65. I love a good scotch. I have tried a bunch. Smooth I have found is a tricky word to use when referring to scotch. My mother in law tried some good scotch I had. She through back the shot, swallowed, yelled FIRE FIRE, and made a face like this......

Laphroig is definitely not in the smooth category. It has a very strong peat flavor.

You are correct. Sometimes it can taste like burning. Goes good with a good cigar.

There must be a Scotch that can help to alleviate the damage done by such atrocities.
