OK, for specifics -- I have a Rem. 700 P .308 Win. Leupold Mark 4, 6.5 - 20x 50mm w/ two piece Mark 4 base and rings. I assume a one piece base would be preferred, but evidently they're hard to find.

But then again, Leupold is like just down the road a few miles, and I have a contact in customer service. I'm betting I could get a Mark 4, 1 piece base, short action, Rem. 700.

Besides the obvious, that it's "one piece" rather than two pieces, how about we address the distinctions?

Why are one piece rails hard to come by? SWFA probably sells them everyday of the week.
Especially for a short action Remington 700.

Here's just a few.

Some like 2 pieces bases for better access to the loading/ejection port.
Some prefer a one piece rail for more rigidity and more options for scope positioning.

I prefer the latter, but if the 2 piece you now have is working for you, why change?
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

if you do change might want to consider Leos new 8/40 and 6/48-8/40 shoulder screw bases which offer something like a 40% increase in screw strength. If your still using 6/48 a better upgrade would have retapped to 8/40s then worry about the 2 vs 1 base stuff.
