That is pretty uncommon with an XD to have malfunctions. I don't recall ever having one in all 4 of my Xds that was not self induced. |

One of the best pistols I ever had was a H&K P9s target the polygon rifleing was quite accurate. I carried a Sig P220 on duty for a couple of years and before that carried a 1911 for a while. Even though I have always liked the 1911 it is a little disconcerting to carry cocked and locked but that is how they have to be carreid. I had a Glock model 30 in 45 which takes the hi caps and it was nice but the Glock 23, 22, 35 type .40 cal guns feel better in my hand. I do like the Glock for a carry gun though because like the Sig P220 there is no safety to forget to take off. The one thing I do like about the Glock is that the trigger is always the same. I've looked at the Springfield Armory XD but have not had the opportunity to shoot one. Stay away from the Sig 1911 Ive had two and both were unreliable. I'd go H&K or Glock or XD. Good luck finding mags that might be what makes the choice.

I have a Springfield 1911 and love it! Still the best feel for shooting to me. I shoot it with the 7 or 10 round clips. Only handgun so far that really feels good shooting one handed. But I haven't had as much practice with others. I have shot a XD in 40 cal. Fun gun. Wouldn't mind getting one. Have always wanted a H&K as well. Maybe someday.

SD,
If you decide to go Glock, you can get one with an SF frame which is a bit slimmer than the old G-21 & 30 frames.

if you do not have to have hi cap then consider the dan wesson pointman 7. personally i believe it is one of the best 1911s on the market and as good as any custom pistols costing much more. tight as a drum with an impecable fit and finish. mine has never misfired or jammed. worth every penny. also beautiful to look at, plus you will not see many of them. another to consider is the cz 97bd, very similar to a 1911, but the slide rides on the inside of the frame. i do not own one or shot one, but www.gun-tests.com gave it a good review. good luck. alot of times it is more fun looking than actually getting.

i have always liked the stis, but what is up with some of their goofy logos and and big engravings of the names of their models on each pistol. at gun shows after people have had their grimy hands on them, they start to look cheapend by those engravings. great guns though.

I would simply pick any of the better hi-cap SA/DA or DAO pistols -- H&K USP, Glock, XD, S&W M&P, etc., and pick the one that feels best in your hands and allows a repeatable grip, because chances are that's the one you'll end up shooting the best.

+1 on Rifledude's advice as well.
I'll throw in a few ideas as well. A stock 1911 with a better pair of sights and just enough ergonomic upgrades to keep it from biting the hell out of you and then go shoot it. I'd stay away from anything Glock bigger than a 9mm, anything bigger and they've tried to stuff bigger cartridges into the same design and they don't do well. ( I carry a Glock 19 daily though I'm a huge fan, just make it a 9mm), I've shot a friends XD45 very good pistol, I don't like them personally for a few reasons, but H&K's are good as well, just make sure you buy a new one because they won't cover any warrenty work if your not the original owner, lastly and my favorite and the .45 I chose above all others was the S&W M&P45 with thumb safeties. Fit's my hand real well with the small grip, has safeties like a 1911 which I'm used to, 10 in the mag, feeds everything like a modern gun should, is not Les Baer or Wilson 1911 accurate but almost, and that'll do for a combat pistol for the added reliability, and has a consistant trigger pull from first to last (hate double singles). It was designed for the .40 S&W caliber which is the hardest of all handgun ammo for a pistol to feed, and is harder on guns that save 10mm. So if it can stand up to that it should be able to digest plenty of .45 ammo.

My advice differs a little: if you are in the least uncomfortable with the "cocked-n-locked carry"of a 1911, don't buy one. It is not the best gun for most shooters for a few good reasons (easy to shoot, difficult to master.)There are simpler solutions, but Id argue there are few if any better for someone dedicated to learning the tool and its effective use.
I've owned a few HKs and like them. I now have an HK45 and like it allot, but it is not a small pistol, not the easiest to conceal. As for ergonomics, dependability, accuracy, and overall wear, it is a great gun.
I've shot an XD, liked it, considered getting one but really didn't have the need. For a carry gun, it is a good option.
A friend in law enforcement told me FBI incident reports show that if your gun is taken and it has a safety, you have approximately 17 seconds before the bad guy squeezes off the first round. If you have a gun with no safety and a bad guy gets it, you have approximately 3 seconds before the bad guys squeezes off a round. For any gun on my hip, I like it to have a thumb safety. Many will disagree, and that's fine, I don't carry my gun to protect them.
My advice: HK if possible, XD is good too, and M&P seems impressive - though I haven't owned or shot one.
And a Sig 220 is always up to the challenge, great gun.

This is one of the reasons I like my new Blachawk Serpa holster so much. It has a clever latch that makes it very difficult for someone else to get your gun out of the holster in the first place.
It also prevents the weapon from being fired while it is still in the holster as well.

Ron,
Not to get off topic but does the Serpa keep the pistol tucked in tight against the body suitable for concealed carry?

I disagree on the large frame Glocks. My G20, 10mm, gets carried and shot a lot. It has never had a hiccup in ten years. It is just as reliable as my G19.
My friends who carry the G21's have the same experiences.
They are just as reliable as my HK's.

I know a guy who claims to have 90,000+
rounds
through his glock 35 and it still works fine. Supposedly the frame
cracked somewhere around 90,000. He and his son both used that gun to
pass the handgun combat master test. Wes actually passed the test
with the cracked frame. He replaced it later. And this was back in 06. They both still use the gun all the time

using retention holsters is cop stuff, if your a civilian avoid it. the topic was orginally 45 acp but since its drifted abit-- the best carry gun is the model 38 glock GAP, and I've got a lot of glocks and 1911s. Doesn't have the snap of the 40, but the same ballistics as the 45 acp and dimensions as the colt commanders. If you can get to a store that has an indoor range and rents guns, put a timer on how fast and accurate ( divide 5 by the time to get the hit factor) you can get a shot off with each gun, say a head shot at 7 yds. compare major power factor calibers only then pick the winner not based on previous bias, looks, or materials. |
