Need some advice.  Looking at getting another .45 ACP.  I currently have a Colt, believe it is a Officers Model, need to get a pic, with a capacity of 6+1.  Love the gun, but looking for a high capacity .45.  I do like the 1911 style and would embrace another especially if compatible with a .22 conversion kit.  Not looking for a custom gun, just a reliable firearm.  I like the SA, but DA will work too.  I have not ruled any out brands at this point.

STI best, then it comes down alot, Para,Springfield, Kimbers or Ciener kits will fit all of them. Personally would suggest getting a really good target 22 however,

You might consider an HK45, it ain't a 1911 but resembles it allot in grip angle.  Also loook at USP45, very good gun.

I agree (mostly) with Dale, I have an SVI - very similar to STI - that runs great and is much more accurate than me; however, it weren't cheap.  Springfield makes a decent high-cap 1911 but there aren't many around.

Para's are pretty good, but avoid the LDA, I had one and didn't like it - trigger-pull on safe was the same as the trigger-pull not on safe.  And it has lots of little moving parts that get mad, my favorite smith wouldn't touch it.

If you shoot 1911s well, forget Glock.

Sig makes a good 45 but it's not high-cap.

Finally, consider the Springfield XD, similar controls to a 1911 (they have a grip safety and I think can now be bought with a thumb safety.)  They are good guns and come with some nice goodies in the case.

I hope you relaod, 45 ammo has gone way up in the past year or so, was $15/box (for target stuff), now $20+.

I'd avoid Para.  I've seen to many minor flaws that should have never left the factory.  Things like a large casting void in the dust cover.  I'm not a large fan of cast guns anyway...

Unless you have the bear paws from hell, I think you will find that a double stack .45 may be a bit much.  I'd look at the C-Z 95.

Well, they ain't bear paws from hell, but hand does measure 8.25 long.

Dale - agree a dedicated .22 is better but if a conversion kit was possible would be nice.  Have not seen an STI.  Is it the level of refinement that the others give up compared to the STI?

RC - brother has a Springfield XD in .40.  He likes it, but just got it.  They are DA only correct?  Yes do reload for my .45, the price of ammo is up.

Silver - you kind of suck my battle ship.  Para was #1 on my list by looking at the specs.  Have not seen a Para up close in a few years.  Sad news in deed.

Appreciate the feed back guys.

HK USP .45 is what's in my wallet.
It fits my large hand just fine and it never fails to go boom.

ive got smaller hands and i really felt comfortable whenever i shot a friend of mine's usp 45. fit me way better than his 1911 colt did for sure. down side is that they dont give the usp's away, but i think for the product the price is justified.

+ 100 on the USP 45, and worth every penny.

I have a Kimber, too, it is very very good - but not high-cap.

Doug, is yours the standard 12 rd USP or the USP compact?

agreed on paras, had the rails rip off the frame on a 9mm, couldn't get the firing pin block and the trigger co-ordinated on a P13, or reliable mags on a P14.

you might consider 10 shot mags in a single stack, the guns are faster (handle better) and your only down 3 rds from the 14 rds double stacks.

I agree on the paras as well.  I had two of them, one single and one double and sold them both for Kimbers.  Much better choice in my opinion.

SD,
Take a look a this, it comes in different barrel lengths and hold a fair amount of ammo, BTW the ergonomics aren't bad either.

Plus one on the Springfield XD.
Mine is a 9mm. but the .45 is the same gun for all practical purposes except chambering and magazine capacity.
I love it; only complaint is that the grip is just a very tiny bit too shallow for my big hands and long fingers. It fits well, except that my finger contacts the trigger at the joint instead of at the pad.The new XDM series has interchangable grips to overcome that and allow a custom fit.

Jim,
Actually I am a 1911 guy myself but I thought SD is looking for a high cap pistol. Although I do not own an XD I have shot one and it felt OK for a plastic gun. BTW, what didn't your buddy like about the XD?

I can understand going to a Kimber, but I've never seen a Ruger that could shade an XD on any feature.

The Xds are the shiznit.  Right now I have two XDM .40s and have had a regular XD .40 and an XD .45.  I still really like the 1911, but the XD is a superior weapon for self defense in my opinion.

And this is the guy who was  instrumental in steering me toward my XD about a year ago!
I'll buy you a beer sometime, Jason!  Cheers

BTW, almost a year later, I again took your advice and picked up a Blackhawk Serpa holster.  Just came in the mail a few hours ago, and I love it!
Now I'll have to buy you another beer sometime!  Cheers
