Jeff Shaara e-mailed me back and told me that Ted Turner had backed out of the project because "Gods and Generals" didn't do well at the box offices.Comrade Ted Turner had said on many occasions that money was no issue in making these historical films.
IMHO,Teds a greety bastard among other things, even though Ted graduated from "McCallie High School" in Chattanooga TN,I'm sure his liberal friends gave him hell about showing the Southern cause in a somewhat positive light in Gods and Generals.I can think of no better actor than Robert Duvall to play Gen.Lee.Duvall claims to be related to Gen Lee,he did a much better job than Comrade Martin Sheen.Stephen Lang did a spectacular job of playing Stonwall Jackson.

Duvall always does a great job but Lang was especially outstanding!! Thunbs Up

Wikipedia talks about the history of the three movie trilogy "Gods and Generals", "Gettysburg", and the purposed "Last Full Measure".

Thunbs Up  Very good movie ( I thought), I just saw it again last week. It's almost 4 hour long and takes you from the beginning of the Civil War to just before Gettysburg. They were supposed to come a sequel but it got the kabosh.

 Gods and generals
"I trust in the future by your deeds in the field, and by the assitance of the same kind providence twas here that favored our cause you will win more victories and add luster to the reputation you now enjoy"
Indeed they did,Regiments(116th and 115th) of the 29th Infantry Division(Blue and Gray) that stormed the beaches at Omaha June 6th 1944 in the first waves trace their lineage to this Brigade.
Still today they have been deployed to Iraq
as a VA National Guard Unit.Their shoulder patch is a an OD green shield with the profile of Stonewall Jackson on mount. My great uncle was in the first wave at Normandy with the 116th,my ggrandfather's brigade fought side by side with "The Stonewall Brigade
