I lust picked up a beautiful tiger maple stocked marlin in 35 remington and was wanting to swap out the scope. It came with a japanese tasco 3x9x32,which the glass is ok,but even comparing it next to a muller apv it is lacking.
Any recommendations?Thanks

I suggest you just sell me that gun then you wont have to worry? really though I would go for a 2.5x8x36 Leupold VXIII or a Leupold compact. your budget will be a real determining factor?

Dump the Tasco for sure!........For a 35 Rem, I wouldn`t go over 6x tops (preferably 5x or less) for magnification and do like the Leupys for their selections, size, weight and customer service.
Good choices are;
1.5-5x20 VX3...............1st choice
1-4x20 VX2..................2nd choice
1.75-6x32 VX3.............3rd choice
4x FX2.........................4th choice
Or you can use a scout mount.
2.75x Leupy or Burris scout scopes.

What base & rings you have on.I've seen many lever guns with that type scope mounted with a quick site set-up.My Marlin has a fixed Redfield 2 3/4 that has been on for over 20 years and my shots are under 100 yards.I just bought a Weaver Classic Extreme on closeout and for the money is a real nice scope,as bright as my Bushnell Elite 4200.Depending on what your budget is for a new scope. The Bushnell Elite line is worth looking at.The Weaver I'm using is a 1-5 power with iluminated dot |

Budget would be a big factor.
I am a fan of the Model 336 .35 Remington myself, though have only hunted with one with open sights. But it is fun to imagine which scope would be perfect!

I paid 350 for the gun so I'd like to keep it somewhere in that range.I'd never seen one with tiger maple. It came with a weaver rail, weaver rings and the tasco.

This fast-handling, modest-range rig needs a fairly compact, low-power scope. Since it is very attractive, I assume by your description, it needs a Leupold. I can't argue with Big Squeeze on this one, (as much as I would like to )... |

Hard to beat a straight-tubed Leupold 1-4x or Nikon 1.5-4.5x in detachable mounts, partly because the straight front end doesn't interfere with the rear sight. But if it will fit around the rear sight the Trijicon 1.25-4x is great.

If you want to preserve the "look" get an El Paso Weaver K2.5. The old blued steel tube scopes look great and perform well. My personal choice is a Burris FastFire II with the 336 mount. Fast and won't change the look or handling of the rifle.

( Ahem )............My first scope in my life was a 1964-era 3X9X32 Tasco....that I put on a 336 Marlin 30-30. It worked fine. You can't see in the dark with it. You couldn't see in the dark with a 1964 Redfield or Leupold, either. [ As a matter of fact, you couldn't see At Dusk with a 2001 Leupold--unless you had a Vari-X III ]...
If I was gonna put a scope on a Marlin today, I think any of the decent 2X7 or 1.5X6 would be great. The 35 Remington is not a long range cartridge.
Keep the Tasco ( unless it is a " new " one from China or somewhere)....and put it on a 22.

im going to go against the grain here either upgrade the open sights or use a red dot 1x type, its a lever gun im from the old school lever guns are meant for open sights.

Yep.....iron sights are Ok for short ranges for hunting accuracy. But a scope, even on a Marlin 336, will certainly improve one's shooting!!

The K2.5 Micro Track El Paso Weaver I have is very good in low light. Much much better than I expected. I believe it's one of the newer ones though. Late 70s? Do check out the Burris FastFire II though. I'm putting one on my pre-safety 35 Rem. 336. Nice that they make a 336 specific mount to.

pyro, A red dot on a 336? My wife put an Aimpoint on her .38-55 Model 94 Winchester, mostly to creep out the super-traditional lever-action guy she bought it from. If a scope isn't OK, then a red dot ain't either. Maybe a fiber-optic front sight, though.... |

That's pretty funny!
I bet it worked pretty well both for shooting, and for creeping- out purposes...

Yeah, it did. In fact he kept asking if she still had it on the rifle, and when he finally quit asking she took it off.... |
