    Posted: April/07/2009 at 05:12
The week-end of 3-5 April saw the Aimshow being hosted in Johannesburg, the City of Gold. The venue was the South African War Museum. A very impresive venue, which allmost stole the show.
On show was the usual: Custom Rifle Makers, Knive makers, the usual array of optics, black powder guns, camo and bushwear, safari outfitters, taxidermists and a host of other hunting related stands.
The show was not as big as I had expected. Absent was most of the international players such as Remington, Leupold, Zeis etc.

Steyr Manlicher was however present with some superb looking firearms. An interesting firearm was their ultra lightweight 270. The barrel was fluted to mid-point, then stepped down with a solid band and then fluted again to the barrel crown.

CZ was also present with some nice firearms.

On the optics front Swarovski was present with their usual mindblowing scopes and binoculars. Leica was also there with superb bino's and rangefinders.

On the rifle front the two standouts were Sabi Firearms and J&J Wapens.

Here are some of the pics taken. ( I apologise for some of the poorer pic quality ).

So how does this work for buying something you want? Do they have a Gov. station on site for the permits? Or do you have to have everything in hand before you go? From all you went through with your Remington, there has to be something in place to make these shows profitable.

A person can purchase anything except for powder, live rounds or a rifle, without a permit. The rounds or powder you can purchase on the spot if you have an existing lic for that caliber.
Should you wish to purchase a rifle, then you do the deal with the shop. He often requires a 50% payment or more upfront. He keeps the rifle in his safe. You then go to the policestation nearest to your home and fill in an application for a license for that specific firearm. Then you wait, and wait, and wait some more. When you are tired of waiting, you wait some more again. Eventually, anything between 5 months (if you harrass and push the police) and two years(if you sit back and wait), the police will issue you with a license. Then only may you go to the dealer and collect your firearm.

A lot has gone out of business, but the situation has stabilised somewhat.

Heh 8shots nice pics. The Aim show seems to get smaller each year, but being at the war musem definately makes up for it. The reason you didnt see Leupold is because the Leupold agency has been taken over by Formalito, they are still getting up to speed. Hopefully they will be there next year, actualy Zeiss was there. You walked past them going to Classic Arms stall(Stery Manlicher). What did you think of Andre V Rooyens work? I especialy liked his side mounts (see the pic of the Kudu and Eland) And the full mount of the Asian Deer

Seeing the artillery peices in photo 3 brings back memory's. Did the initial testing with the G6 (self propelled gun on the left of the photo) and spent 5 months in Angola with the G5 (one on the right of the photo)

Regards Chris

Chris, you are correct. I now recall seeing Zeis.

Andre's work is excellent. Yes, the war museum brought back a few memories!
