I've decided to go with a SS10x42 for my 700 PSS in 300 win mag. From what I've read, I've decided to go with Badger mounts/rings.
Which mount and rings do I need for my particular set-up, also what's your opinion on the side focus...worth the extra cash? Edited by SF SSgt |

I love my SS10x42mm good choice. I'm left handed so I got the rear focus, it's all about preference. Most on this forum would recommend Badger and with .300 winmag it'll probably be a good choice. You could look at Leupold Mk4 rings and base but the Badger stuff is better. You could probably get away with medium rings. I had to go with high rings on my Savage so the bolt would clear the scope, but I may get my bolt handle bent and go with medium rings. The closer you can get the scope to the action and barrel the better.

I would consider the Badger medium rings w/ a 20 moa rail, if you plan on shooting LR. Even if you don't now, a 20 moa rail is a good thing to have any way, IMO. |

If you do any shooting from the prone the side focus would suit your needs better. You would have to get up on your knees to adjust the rear parallax. Can start to bug you over time having to constantly move around so much. Really the only advantage of the side focus is accessibility. If you have time to adjust you parallax and don't have to make a rapid adjustment I would just get the rear parallax.
Here are the Badger mounts you would need: |

Cheaptrick is right. A 20moa base will pay off in the long run but the SS10x42 has more than enough adjustment to get out to 1000+ without a 20moa base. If you get that 20moa base you'll probably have enough to get out to 1300-1500 yards with that .300winmag. |

So if I do go with the 20 moa base, would I have any problems using the rifle in a hunting application where my shots would vary from 75-500m?
Also, how much barrel/bolt clearance would I have with the standard vs medium rings?
I want this rifle to be a versatile as possible. I'll be using it for LR, Tactical and hunting.
Thanks for all of the inputs. Edited by SF SSgt |

I wouldn't think you would have any problems. The SS has lots of elevation to get you out to 1000 yards. But a 20 moa rail just makes sense to me. It cost the same, and if you ever change scopes(like me!), a 20 moa rail really comes into it's own. I change scopes between several guns, but the bases stay the same. You may change your scope to a scope with less internal adjustment. Just a thought...... YMMV Edited by cheaptrick |

So what rings will fit? Should I go with Medium or Standard? Will the Standard rings and Standard mount allow enough room for Butler Creeks, kill-flash and sun-shade?

Medium, the sunshade and killflash doesn't change the objective size even with the butler caps.

The sunshade, and kill flash are the same diameter as the scope objective, however a set of flip up covers will add millimeters to the OD, so a high ring may be required if you plan on using the flip up covers on the scope.
The only way to know for sure, is to try them out. |

A 42mm objective, 20 moa rail, BC caps, MEDIUM rings SHOULD work. I don't know if standard will. I doubt it.
I ran a USO SN-3 w/ a 44mm objective, 20 moa rail, and BC caps and had medium rings and it worked great. Close, very close, but good to go. It gave me a great cheek weld.
David is right, it will add some, but mediums should still work for you. You could always call Marty @ Badger and ask. Then again, I emailed him and he told me to get the standards, which were too low. He graciously replaced them for mediums for me. He's a terrific guy. |

Sorry guys, 1 final question before ordering.....
I'm going with the SS10x42, Badger standard mount and the question is...will the Max-50 standard rings fit and allow for BC flip-ups? |

Update:
After speaking with both Chris from SWFA and Marty from Badger Ordnance, it has been decided that I'll be going with the standard Badger mount with the standard height Max-50 rings.
I'll post pics once I complete the set-up. |

Brother your gonna love that set up. I've got a tricked out 700 in 300 WM. I run mine with standard height rings and a 20 moa base w/ a Mark IV 10X. More than enough elevation to get past 1000 yds. If your gonna shoot distance pick up a good bubble type anti-cant device. A lot of companies make good ones. I like the one from Mounting Solutions Plus. Its very compact, sits directly over the tube (not hanging off the side to get snagged) & its very rugged.

Dilligaf,
I'll definately look into the anti-cant, my scope, base, BC's and killflash just arrived from SWFA...excellent service, just wish I knew that the sunshade was on back order. Didn't notice it until I did my inventory and thought they had forgot to ship it.. Looked at the invoice and noticed it won't be in until 30JUN.
Anyways, I'm getting ready to ship my bolt off for the Badger Ordnance knob, bolt reinforcement and firing pin assembly upgrade. I really can't wait until I can take this rifle to the range. |

If your shipping stuff off to Badger that means G.A. Precision will be putting it on, (they are in the same building). They do excellent work! George is almost god like, my 700 will shoot 3/8" @ 100 yds now that its broke in (if I do my part) 1/2" groups are no sweat. They are the only ones I will let work on my rifles and I know you wont be disappointed with their work. You will really like the SSG style knob, it is an excellent addition to you set up and much nicer than the standard knob. This is the bolt haldle the rifle should have came with. Word of warning watch out these things are extremely addictive or is this warning to late? When you get it all done put up a photo.

Joe,
You're right on point with the "addiction" I haven't even fired the rifle and I'm already modifying. I went with Superior Tactical Solutions for the knob installation, improved firing mechanism (fluted firing pin, smoothing/nickel-plating the firing pin chamber) and the bolt reinforcement. I'll keep you posted. So far their customer service has been top-notch so I'm sure their workmanship will be to. I wasn't even aware of being able to order directly from B.O. or I would have, especially after receiving an e-mail with a 20% discount to all military. |

No problem, my bolt was received on Monday and according to Brad it should be a 5-day turnaround. Hopefully I'll have pics for you all next week.
