Seems like it would be a great round!  Or maybe there is one and I just don't know about it.  like a .26-06.

take em!

There is a wildcat known as the 6.5-06. It is not very well known, but I agree with you that it should be an absolutely awesome blend of fine attributes.

Yessir.  I would buy a few rifles in 6.5-06 if commercially available.  Right now you can only get them in custom guns.  I have a few 6.5x55s that I really like and use for deer.

That would be a great caliber.  You could probably get 2800 to 3000 fps out of 120 to 140 grain bullets.  That would make a great long range deer caliber

Why not just shoot a .260 Rem?  You don't lose much at all to an '06 size case.   See .308 vs 30-'06.

Pretty much any rifle with an -.06 boltface could be as easily and economically re-barrelled to a 6.5-06 as any other chambering. No magazine or feed ramp alterations, either. You'd probably be paying a bit of a premium for reloading dies though.

Handloaded to run pretty much wide open, there's a fairly significant difference between a 6.5-06 and a .260. Especially with a fast twist and the heavier bullets, I think enough to matter.

while the .260 is an amazing little animal, the 6.5-06 is better. the 6.5-06 is on par with the 6.5rem mag which isnt to far behind the .264 win mag. where the 6.5-06 makes the .260 look bad is when bullets 140gr and heavier are used. the extra case capacity in the -06 case helps it out down range.

what is the metric equivalent of the 30-06.... 7.62X?  The .308 is 7.62X51 I think.  what is the 7.62X54?  Wondering how close the Swede comes to the '06.
take em!

At .30-06 would be a 7.62 x 63 I believe

A-Square makes brass for the 6.5-06.  My uncle and I have talked for years about getting some beater rifles at a gun show or using one of our mausers and converting them to 6.5-06 ourselves.  I guess we would have to do up a few to make up for the cost of the reamers and go nogo guages.  But I have been a fan of the 6.5 since the first 1913 swedish mauser I bought 13 years ago.

Looks like Hart chambers barrels in 6.5-06.  Hornady, RCBS and Redding all make dies for it.
