Thinking about putting one on a Remington .308 XCR compact tactical. I like fixed power rifle scopes of moderate magnification of highest optical quality. Looks like IOR has stopped producing their 6x42mm tactical scope or I might consider that one. S&B does make a 6x42mm PM scope, but not currently being sold in this country.

Gotta be fixed power?

If you are going to drop that much $$, why get fixed?

I am used to fixed power scopes and the only variable power scope I have owned, I found myself keeping it on one power setting just about all the time. Although the above scope is rather expensive, it is still considerable less then their (S&B PM) variable power scopes.

True.

But what do you "need"?  What are you doing with the rifle?  And at what range?

not for hunting.....informal target shooting from 100 to 300 yds at a gun range and maybe a couple times a year, some shooting at a remote location in the desert or mountains
