I just went to Wally World to buy some CCI Mini-Mag 22LR because at $6.47/100 they've got better prices than online, besides all the online stuff is out of stock. Well, Walmart is out of stock as well. I bought the last 6 boxes he had left. They had plenty of shotgun ammo but as far as anything else...the racks were bare. Bare bones. He said he can't get any more. Is the ammo market drying up? Or is it just the law of supply and demand? Is everyone stockpiling ammo causing this shortage and the ammo manufacturers can't keep up? What's going on here?

I'm in Michigan. They can't keep it on the shelves. I heard about a guy who bought an entire pallet load. This depression thing has people stocking up. I heard a guy on the radio saying that if all the banks fail and the people have to barter for goods, non-perishable food and ammo will be high priority items...very tradeable. He wasn't a doomsday guy either, just talkin reality.

I heard this is just a supply/demand thing....but I'm starting to wonder about that.  I haven't seen a box of .357 or 45 acp in several weeks.  You would think that ammo companies would be tripping over themselves to fill orders in this ecomony...very strange.

I'm fearful that it goes a bit deeper than just demand from the public. Like there's something that they (ammo manufacturers) know that we don't (yet).

I just googled "ammo shortage" and learned that .223 and 9mm are the biggest hit with backorders taking up to a year to fullfill. WTF? A year to fulfill? It said that the cop orders go through priority one, and the rest of us...get in line. Yeah, there's something goin on. There's something we don't know, and they ain't talkin.

I think manufacturers are backlogged because they are perfecting their coding systems. Maybe that's what we're not supposed to know. My local shop can't get primers, or powder, and not he can't seem to get me .30 cal. bullets! None at all! Something is up.

Two years ago I had problems getting 9mm and .45 hollow point.  Ball was easy to get back then. But "cop" grade ammo back ordered for 6 months then.  One guy I know who is an ammo dealer said he can only get 1/4th of what he is asking for. And now the sleeping giant has just awakend that the lies they wanted to come true from the election are not only not going to happen, but things can not only worse, but weird.

There are a couple of things going on. Remington is a part of Chrysler now and that company is being bailed out.  Remington lost a lot of money last year.  Now that Chrysler has been bailed out that could get bizzar... Public private partnerships... Import bans or large tarifs...

Supply and demand... Commodity prices are up, even thought they have droped some.  I expect some places to have long term contracts that maybe loosing the ammo companies money. How may truck loads would you send those guys?

We are still using alot of ammo in Iraq.  There is an idiot next door in Iran.  Mexico is on the verge of a civial war with thier drug cartels and the cartels don't seem to be having problems getting guns or ammo.

If you are an ammo company running three shifts for the government and have a congress and white house that does not like war or civilians with guns would you expand? Would you be able to find somebody to raise the money if you were?  This is what happened in WWII.

Bottom line...... We're hosed, at least for the present and near future. No telling how much worse it will get either. Policies of our present politicians being in full control, and add the rise in demand because of that (justified concern) as well.

I don't know about the rest of your states but Michigan is hosed, for big time real hosed. No jobs, businesses closing doors daily, this includes restaurants, entire strip malls of shops, grocery chains, newspapers, no one is spared. I look at ammo as an insurance policy about now. I just bought some new fish line too. When the stores close down...I'm eatin rabbits, squirrels, and fish. There's a ton of deer here too. A ton. My wife compained about me buying all that ammo. She said, "When you get hungry, eat your ammo." I told her that someday, it just might save her life. People have their head in the sand about all this. When the inner city folks start foraging into the suburbs and the National Guard hit the streets, I'm packin my pickup with as much as I'll need and headin for the woods. I ain't playin no Fort Sumpter, hold off the renegades crap...I'm gettin out of Dodge. I think some people are planning for the hold off. Not me. Home invasions here in the suburbs have already increased 100% in the last year. These damn "opportunists" are bold MF'rs, packin their 9's. I'm outta here when that day comes.

Georgia is in that same bracket. The housing boom here, and the illegals that were doing all the construction. The resulting unemployment due to the monetary constraints, and then add the cartels roots being here as well. It's ugly. The unemployment rate is going to reach 10% or more before the end of summer. When you look at the gun ownership by percentage here in Ga. Ammo will be very hard to get, and expensive at that.

Ammo shortages are like oil shortage, some how it goes away if you pay more, makes you wonder if there is a real shortage or if they are just taking advantage of the times.

Unemployment is already 12% here...and climbing. I see no end to it. Even if they give the "Big Three" a zillion dollars bail out money...who can afford to buy a car? No One!! That's who. Lot's of people are eating pizza because that's cheap, but regular restaurants are hurt, so are movie theaters, tourism is shot in the ass...nobody can afford a vacation. It's a good thing I call a week in the woods a vacation cause that's totally FREE. Yeah buddy. Big hotels here are mortally wounded because no one comes here for conventions anymore. The casinos are all claiming bankruptcy. Who can afford to go and watch a Tiger game when 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs, 2 beers, and parking will cost you $125.00? I'll tell ya...NO ONE! Last one out, turn out the lights. This ship is takin on water. This ship is starting to list towards starboard. Man the lifeboats.

Ah Government at it's finest -- the ship is afloat but nobody is at the wheel.

Thought I'd never see the day when you couldnt find 22 ammo in Walmart but it's on us.  there are multiple factors at play.   The ATK rep (they own Federal Ammo, Speer etc) told me a year ago that Law Enforcement orders for .223 and .308 are running about a year behind due to the war ammo needs.  While CNN would have you think that the problems in Iraq are becoming more controlled and less violent since O took office I do not get the same intel from the front line and they are not allowed to say how bad it really is but sufice it to say if you go outside the wire you have a 50% chance of making it back without injury.  We simply are so arrogant as to think we can afford to be politically correct to the muslim world without them taking it as weakness.  People are concerned about self defense, economic failure or collapse, survival hunting, the democrats taking the guns and or ammo or adverse legislation on ammo. Some stores have things coming in and going right out other stores just dont have anything comming in because they didnt stay on top of ordering or they cant get credit to buy with.  Some gun dealers have been very aggressive in their buying because they are watching closely what is going on.  Some gun dealers are price gouging charging way more for items than a fair mark up and getting whatever they ask.  For the last several years most of these stores had a few boxes of each caliber and only sold one occasionally now all of a sudden the demand has gone through the roof.  There is still stuff out there but you have to hunt for it and you have to be dilligent. I looked for varget powder for the last three weeks same store that didnt have it yesterday got in 8 cans this morning and by mid afternoon it was gone, a year ago 8 cans might have lasted them two weeks.  Federal primers are really hard to come by they are going to Uncle Sam for war and training for war.  Add the new reg about demilling all mil brass and companies that sell remanufactured like Black Hills are hurt by that.  The bigest problem with everyone arming up so heavily is that if we have a worse economic collapse it is likely to be violent and the basics food shelter heat will be issues.  Put everyone that hunts out there after the same rabbit and it could get ugly real quick - we depend a lot on shipping, and we dont preserve and store food and grow food and raise farm animals like our forefathers did so we are not well prepared for what appears to be coming.  Plant a victory garden and pray for our country judgement is coming.

Most of the gun and ammo shortage can be traced to the election of our very liberal President Obama and complete Democratic control of Congress.  A similar reaction was present during the early days of Clinton but eventually subsided as hunters/shooters realized that complete bans were not going to happen.  This time may be different because of the severity of the recession and the uncertainty it creates.  I'm not suggesting a complete banning but we still do not know which of the many gun/ammo proposals will actually become law.  And during times of great difficulty our rights are more easily removed (in the interest of public safety).  So the hoarding continues.

As to the economy the prevailing mood on Wall Street is that it will begin to recover by the end of this year.  But nobody really knows and it's all based on the belief (hope?) that the bank bail-outs, numbering in the Trillions of Dollars, will be successful in restoring credit.  The biggest outrage is that the majority of Americans are against the bail-outs (and ridiculous executive bonuses) but the Obama adminstration keeps doing them with the latest being presented on Monday.  This "Public/Private Investment Partnership" (the PPIP) will be the biggest transfer to date of taxpayer money to the well-connected.

The fact is that while unemployment keeps rising we as taxpayers are on the hook for Trillions of Dollars going to bail-out Wall Street and the big banks.  I'm taking the time to repeat what all of us know in our gut and that is the future is more uncertain now than any time since the Great Depression.  I'm not suggesting a repeat of the 30's but I am suggesting that it would be stupid to assume that there won't be unintended consequences to the actions of the Federal Government, Obama, the Treasury and the Federal Reserve.  At the minimum it is likely that our standard of living will decline for years as they keep piling up these bail-outs.  Buckle up!

BTW, public outrage of the AIG bonuses did have effect.  The President and his administration cannot go to Congress for more money for this latest bail-out, the PPIP.  So they are doing an end-run around Congress by tapping into money already appropriated and money from the Federal Reserve and FDIC.  It is purposely complicated and worded to imply an upside to the general public.  But we assume the vast majority of risk if it doesn't work, not the wealthy and well-connected 'investors'.  If we do not speak out it will proceed and grow in size.  I have contacted my Congressman, Senators, and The Speaker of the House through emails to voice my opposition to this bail-out.  I would urge all of you to do the same.  I googled their email addresses - it was easy.  Please consider doing the same.
