I remember as a kid at the farm shooting my gramp's 30-30 Winchester, lever action. I believe it was a Model 70, based on the saddle rifle you see in the cowboy movies. It had a nice short barrel in heavy brush, and was a pretty damn good gun. What happened to those?
You gotta carry it.

Nothing at all, thousands still around in deer camps everywhere.  I believe you are referring to the M94.

Still an excellent deer calibre if it's range limitations kept in mind and are careful with the hammer.

Used to be viewed as about a 150 yd round.  Blunt nose required for tube feeding sheds velocity and elevation like  a duck sheds water (bit of an exaggeration there).

Fine shorter range round and rifle especially suited to walking in the hardwoods. But like every other,  placement is the most important factor.

The Hornady LEVERevolution has improved the trajectory a lot but I have no experience with that ammo.

Gotcha...it's all about the blunt nose. In heavy hardwoods (which this was) he didn't even have it scoped. That's probably why. You'd never have a shot more than 150 yards, if that.
You gotta carry it.

Nothing happened. They are still around in good #`s. I see them at the range on occasion.

These days there are more cartridges offered in a lever other than a 30-30.

Except for old eyes I wouldn't scope a rifle like that - strictly personal preference here.

Many have scoped the '94 quite successfully  but to me it screws up the handling characteristics.  Not a big deal if your stand hunting but I like the way your hand can grip around the receiver when you're walking.

After 4 million of the things quietly rusting in the back of the pick up truck, they went out of production... You can still buy the Marlin.

I like the old 30-30. It is excellent at what it does. Within 150 yards it is a deer collector.  I had Winchesters and Marlins.  They would be handy, too, for home defense.  I also had a 25-35 once.  That was a nice little Winchester.

I have an old Winchester M94(?) in 32 Win Spcl. (which was the a big competitor of the 30-30's "back in the day").  Technically it belongs to my dad, but unless he figures out that it's not in his safe and actually asks for it, he's not getting it back.

I'm planning on trying some of that LEVERevolution ammo in this gun and maybe taking a deer, an antelope,  or perhaps even a cow elk with it this year.

And Hornady is loading for it.

It is definitely a gun that one would be unwise to use as their primary SHTF-type weapon as ammo is most decidedly a challenge to consistently acquire.  But, if you buy a box or two whenever you can and thus keep a small reserve available, it is a way fun little gun to have/shoot. It also makes for a good conversation peice since there are not very many of these around anymore.

I bought a couple of box's of 30-30 Hornady LEVERevolution ammo for my pre 64 model 94 and couldn't my eyes, the old gal is a real tack driver with this ammo. BTW, when I was a kid growing up in Upstate NY the 30-30 was the number "1" deer and black bear rifle cartridge.

One of the more interesting chamberings that the model 94 came in was 38-55.  I had one in 30-30 as a kid and killed several nice deer with it. I have one in 44mag which I like better.  Marlin makes one in 44mag and one in .357 mag (koshkins favorite) and they also make the awesome 45-70 and 450 marlin, 308marlin, and 444marlin. Lever guns have a lot going for them and are truely a historic american firearm. It's a shame that Winchester discontinued them.  Some of the Marlins are stainless and they are easy to mount a scope on.

I would really like to get one of these.  It would make a great companion to my S&W Mountain Gun.   Alas, there are too many other things I want as well and nowhere near enough money to get them all.

The middle two are my 30-30's ( with 45/70 book ends) ..A Marlin 336SS and the Win model 94. The Marlin is the better shooter , and puts Hornady Evolution into nice 1 to 1.5 inch 100yd groups. The Winchester likes Winchester power points , and keeps them right around 2 inches at 100 yd.s . I have several wundermags and the like, but inevitably always bring one of these along to deer camp. They make great brush and drive guns, and just plain "feel right' to carry.

One thing I like about the Marlin is you can clean the barrel from the breach.
