Well, my two primary hunting rifles are the 25-06 and the 30-06. They can do about anything I need. However, I have this hankering for a 35 Whelen (basically a 35-06). Do I need it ...maybe and maybe not but I want it. I'm looking at a NIB Rem CDL, but I think it's a bit over priced. Besides, I'm not really a Rem guy. My other choice is a Ruger Hawkeye as they are now offering it in the .35 Whelen. I'm leaning towards the Ruger. What says everybody else? An and all opinions are welcomed. Thanks all.

i personally like remingtons more than rugers, they have nicer fit and finish and they have an adjustable trigger. the new hawkeye is still a nice rifle though.

If you feel you can step up to the 35 Whelen, then why not take it a step further!!
With the right bullet, what cartridge shoots flatter the the `06, flatter than the 35 Whelen, as flat as the 270 Win, and hits the target much harder than all three when the bullet gets there?
How about a .375 Ruger in a Hawkeye African? Maybe the handier 20" tubed Alaskan?
Won`t be doing any African hunting? No matter! From big hogs, bull elk on up to bison, moose and to the big bears, the 375 Ruger would be my choice over the 35 Whelen.

if both rifles shot the heaviest bullets in my nosler manual with the max loads out of 7lb rifles the .375 ruger would almost double the recoil of the .35whelen. the 250gr bullet with the whelen would make about 32ft lbs the 300gr .375 would make 52ftlbs with the 8lb ruger alaskan. |

Never been a huge fan of Ruger rifles mostly because they don't have any big reputation for accuracy. I have only seen one in 280 Rem that was a very accurate rifle. Most of the others were mediocre and some shot patterns, not groups.

Doesn't a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs have approximately the same recoil factor as a 375 and if so, while unpleasant at the bench both would be manageable.

thats correct, and at 20ftlbs of recoil 90% of shooters will flinch, imagine what you will do with 2.5 times that amount. |

I've shot enough 12 ga slugs to know that there is no longer any reason for me to tolerate that much recoil with so sh*tty ballistics attached.

You know where I live deer hunting is done with slug guns so just before the season opens the range is full of guys and gals sighting in their 12 gauge slug guns and no one really complains.

Sure mine may be a rarity, but considering how my luck runs, that isn't a very likely possibility. It also bears noting that a hunting buddy of mine has one chambered in 270, and his is accurate also.
More likely is that there are too many that buy Rugers and don't get what they expect so they complain about it. Remington, Savage, Weatherby, and some others make the accuracy claims which Ruger does not. Maybe that is where the falsehood comes from. Like I said mine is accurate, so I'll just go by what I can state as a known.

I load for a ruger in 280rem and it groups 5 shot in under a inch at 100 and a 2 1/4 at 300 with 160gr accubonds.

Who says you gotta shoot the 300 grainers along with max loadings? Calculate instead what the recoil would be using a 260 gr A/B at 2850 fps, from a 8 3/4 lb rifle with scope (my Alaskan). Also, calculate a 270 gr @ 2808 fps (also from my Alaskan), and now see what ya get. Those are two of my MAX loads, which certainly don`t need to be used on any hunt.
Like all cartridges, the 375 Ruger can be loaded down too. A 260-270 grainer moving at 2600-2700 fps or even less, would easily more than cover anything on the N/A continent along with having reduced recoil.

I understand all the posturing, but I have yet to come across North American game that ran from my 300WM.
There was the bobcat I split stem-to-stern, and that turtle that made the pink mist then ceased to be, but nothing has ever lived. I might one day get a .338 or something for hunting aircraft at long range; till then, the 300 does fine by me. |

I like the CDL better than the Ruger. I prefer the looks and I think the fit and finish is a step up from the Ruger, too. They are both solid choices.

A wee bit of a difference between the Rugers of years past vs the newer more recent ones. Barrel manufacturing has changed within recent years, as Ruger now is making their own barrels. Quality levels have increased greatly. Their beddings have also gotten better. Triggers are much better with the LC6 new design too.
Regardless of how well a rifle`s quality and bedding is, there are certain loads that will group better than others.
There are still those who associate the cheapie Bushnells of old with todays 4200`s too! Not the same! Likewise with the newer Ruger rifles.
