Yea they have pretty standard chamberings in most of their rifles. But a lot of people are using Savages because of what you get for the price

Now we're talkin...Bushnell has a 3x9x40 for 131.00, plus a used Savage...and I'd be in business for maybe less than 5 bills. That's what I'm talkin about.
You gotta carry it.

All these broke people here in Michigan are pawning off everything but their first born. I might find the whole outfit for a song if I did some looking. I might have to pawn something off to get one, but priorities are priorities. When the crap hits the fan, I'd rather have the gun than some electronic piece of junk anyway...where's that gonna get me? You can't eat plastic. I'm just a jolly fellow aren't I? Rather pragmatic , uh? Naw...I'm not negative, just gettin ready. Can't hurt.

If your budget is on the short you will have to disregard the 260 it is not offered by many of the lower priced guns makers
if you could use a 7-08 , 308 , 243 look at the Howa or Savage for an incredible $399.00 you can get a Weatherby Vangaurd as well?

I would stay away from the package deals as the companies usually cheap out on the scopes for their package rifles. Save the $100 and upgrade to a Bushnell or Nikon or whatever your preference may be

Why not grab a new Wby Vanguard in 308 for around $400 ( with factory guaranteed accuracy ) and put a 3200 3x9  Elite on her -- Never seen one that wasn't a shooter, readily available  308 ammo and you're set ..

Here's my Remington M7 in .260. It is a top choice, too.

For the money you just can't beat all you get with a stainless Savage

for around $625.00 on Gunbroker

top it off with a Zeiss

and you'll have all you need.
Guns only have 2 enemies, rust and politicians

That is a good sign that you have your priorities straight.
  Seriously.
The optics are every bit as important as the platform, perhaps more so.

If your will to go used, then keep a check on your local gun and pawn shops. From now to june there should be a fair amount of stuff comming in, people tradin or trying to get money for vacations and such. I haven't any experience with savage rifles, but can't see them holding with the Rem 700 in alot of ways. I'm not saying they don't, but would be suprised. If you see something you like offer them 100 under what they have on it. Especially if the shelves are packed. When most take a trade they can afford to neg price. I say Rem because they hold value well and unless the barrel is damaged you can count on a good hunting rifle. You may even find the cal. you want. I going to pick up one I saw in a local sales paper for 350.00 with a Nikon scope. There are some deals around, just keep lookin. Good luck!
Take care of Soldiers, Show em how its done and do it with em, Run to the Fight & and hold your ground! I die my men go home! If you're a NCO and this ain't you. GET OUT! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Ok, I've been digesting. For the cheapest, flatest, lightest, least recoil platform, in stainless, with ammo availability that'll be a good long range, multi-purpose deer rifle I believe that we've already ruled out the .308. We've come to an agreement on the .243, 25-06, .260, .270, and the 7-08 (7mm). Correct? It sounds like the .260 is perfect, except the guns cost a mint and ammo is not readily available. Whereas the 25-06, .270, and 7-08 are all available from Savage, Remington, and not to forget the Weatherby Vaguard platforms. Is the .243 too small too consider?  I know it's flat, but how bouts the knockdown? You see too big (anything over .300) is gonna kick like a mule, and too small ain't gonna get the job done. A buddy of mine shot a deer at 250yds with a .240. The bullet passed right through the deer. He just stood there for second...I don't think he even felt it...and ran away. The bullet obviously didn't hit any vitals. Fast..yes. Effective...maybe not. I know all of this is alot of conjecture. All of you are more expert than me. You all have preferences for one reason or another, and they're all well taken. I guess this decision is not definitive. At least we've got it narrowed down. You know what I'm looking for, now...is there a definitive answer, or does it matter?
You gotta carry it.

I think 7mm-08 or .270 would be your best two choices

I'd go for the flatest, long range punch for the buck. Maybe it's the .270, uh?
You gotta carry it.
